I think that if Aerion had accepted the trial by combat. One on one. Maekar would have offered himself as Aerion’s champion – whether Aerion would’ve accepted is another discussion entirely.

Because he would be more evenly matched with Duncan. Not that he thinks that Aerion is unskilled. But you’d need much more brute force against Duncan than what Aerion probably has. And not only does Maekar have brute force he has skilled brute force which Duncan does not.

As for motivation: what is your own life against the life of your children?

I don’t think that Maekar was thinking in terms of teaching his kids a lesson when it came to the fight. I think he was more focused on his children surviving.

Maekar had chicken pox at seventeen, the summer before he started uni, and it left terrible scars on his face, so Maekar hasn’t been clean shaven ever since.

Maekar chainsmokes from age fifteen.

Maekar is from London, Dyanna is from Gibraltar - Don’t ask her if she’s British or Spanish, her answer is too complicated and long. Maekar would summarize as “She’s from Gibraltar”,  but pronounce Gibraltar in Spanish.

Myriah - Maekar’s mum - is also from Gibraltar but she has a straightforward position that Gibraltar is British.

Dyanna and Maekar meet during the first week of uni at Oxford, during a fundraising dinner.

Maekar is a law student and Dyanna is a veterinary student.

Everyone thinks Maekar would be the kind of petty that if you ask for water when he’s mad at you, he hands you a glass with ice and tells you to wait. Everyone’s wrong. He’d go get a glass of water and drink it in front of you.

Dyanna gets pregnant with Daeron at the beginning of their second years of uni. They elope. Their parents are very angry, but supportive so they both manage to graduate. Their parents pay for their lodgings and their studies and anything they would’ve paid for if Dyanna hadn’t gotten pregnant, but they draw the line at paying for Daeron not emergency needs.

Maekar works all the way from the moment Dyanna gets pregnant to the day he dies.

Dyanna had a IUD when she got pregnant with Aerion. Maekar gets a vasectomy after Dyanna tells him she’s pregnant again.

Baelor takes all three of his youngest brothers to a sex education class after that.

Maekar went to his fair share of classes with a baby strapped to his chest, so did Dyanna. But only Maekar got positive attention because of it.

Maekar gets promoted from paralegal to barrister the day after he graduates.

Maekar gets his vasectomy reversed the week after graduation, hence Aemon.

His brothers call Aemon “Grad party”.

Dyanna manages to graduate only a year later, already pregnant with Aemon.

Aemon and Daella are Irish twins.

They stay in Oxfordshire because Dyanna finds a job as a farm veterinarian and Maekar starts his masters degree.

They eventually get their own farm. It is a respectable estate.

Maekar is a Constitutional Lawyer, he has his own firm. Later in life, in a personal capacity, he “volunteers” on Baelor’s campaign for PM.

Rhae’s first word was “fuck”. Maekar is secretly proud.

All the children speak Llanito (What Dyanna spoke to them in) and Spanish (because Maekar insisted that no form of Spanglish has any professional use).

Maekar got a definitive vasectomy after Rhae was born.

Unlike the other children, Aerion and Daeron never enter their parent’s room without knocking. Maekar and Dyanna were always at it.

Maekar’s hobby is wood chopping.

When Maekar opens his firm, he commutes everyday from Oxfordshire to London.

Maekar has terrible road rage, though he claims to love driving

He loves the excuse to yell obscenities at people.

Maekar listens exclusively to dad - rock. Though he secretly loves Joquin Sabina because of Dyanna and later in life Chapel Roan because of Rhae (He belts out Pink Pony Club in the car when he’s alone - he also knows the Hot To Go dance).

Red Wine Supernova is Daeron’s karaoke song though.

Maekar is called to school for a parent-teacher meeting over his children at least once every two months.

Daeron was found drinking more than once.

Aerion and Aegon get into fights constantly. Though Aerion gets into fights because he’s a bully, while Aegon gets into fights because he’s defending other kids.

Rhae swears too much, always has.

Aemon skips two years so he gets bullied quite a lot.

Daella doesn’t cause problems. She’s Maekar’s “easy child” or so he thinks.

All six children are expert raigebaiters, Maekar is their favourite victim. Baelor, another ragebaiter, is sure they’ll cause Maekar an aneurysm…

Aegon uses far too much gen alpha slang and memes for Maekar’s liking. He doesn't understand half the things he’s saying.

Maekar insists all his children have to know how to drive, drive stick and do the basic maintenance for their car. No matter if they prefer public transport, have the money to uber the rest of their lives, and have their mechanics on speed dial.

Daeron is schizophrenic and an alcoholic. Trying to hide his schizophrenia symptoms is what led to his alcoholism.

Daeron’s most constant hallucination is a dragon that tries to burn everything down.

Once during Rhae’s first solo dance recital, shyness overtook her and she started crying. Daeron climbed onstage and tried to follow the choreography with her. Maekar stood by the stage and stared at anyone who even dared giggle, including Aerion.

After Daeron went to rehab, Maekar also stopped drinking and smoking.

Maekar’s terrible at taking his blood pressure medication and Daella reminds him everyday to take it. Even when they are fighting and not speaking.

Maekar’s not close with Aerys. But he adores Rhagel and Alys and visits them at their assisted living facility once a month.

Aerion is a paranoid bipolar, he has his first break out later in life so he’s able to avoid the help he needs.

Aerion also smokes, not as much as his father, but he does. He doesn’t enjoy it, he just thinks it makes him look badass. It doesn’t.

The family loves Ted Lasso. No one says anything about Roy Kent and Maekar.

Daeron has a crush on Kiera, his cousin Valarr’s girlfriend. She doesn’t think much of him. Maekar is aware of the situation, Baelor is not.

Daeron is the eldest but he’s a year behind Aerion at uni, due to his schizophrenia, drinking problem, and then rehab.

Daeron jokes that he went to at least a year of uni strapped to his parents chests, so he should be able to skip a year.

Aemon is a year behind Daeron because he skipped a couple of years in school.

Daeron is studying social work at Oxford Brooke to be able to live at home and stay close to his support system.

Aerion is studying law at Oxford because he wants to follow his father's footsteps.

Aemon studies biology and history at Harvard as a premed student. He is a doctor by twenty four and goes on to work for Doctors Without Borders.

Though Maekar’s parents insist on sending the boys to Eton, they even offer to pay for it, Dyanna puts her foot down and forbids her children from being sent to boarding schools. Maekar respects her wishes even after her death, even if he feels overwhelmed.

Dyanna didn’t want her children wearing child harnesses - even though their lives would’ve been so much easier if they did - so Daeron has it so ingrained in him to hold his siblings hands that he does it into adulthood. Rhae and Aemon allow it. 

Dyanna dies tending to their own horses, when one kicks her in the head.

Daeron has been scared of horses ever since.

Maekar never sells the farm. He hires Dyanna’s assistant to tend to the animals. Because the children love them and he thinks it’s what she would’ve wanted.

After Dyanna dies Baelor and Jena spend a few months at Maekar’s helping him out. Jena teaches Maekar how to do his daughter’s hair.

Maekar does his best but Daella and Rhae are perpetually stuck with a terrible ponytail.

Daella eventually starts doing Rhae’s hair.

Daeron allowed Daella and Rhae to paint his nails when they were small, eventually he picked up the habit himself because he liked how it looked.

Maekar is caught off guard when Daella gets her first period, so he takes a class so it doesn’t happen again when it comes to Rhae’s time.

He sometimes thinks Dyanna died, because they agreed that he would give The Talk to the boys and she to the girls. And she wanted to embarrass him by making him give the talk to the girls.

Unlike the other maekarlings Rhae has never once knocked on her father’s door when entering his bedroom.

Maekar does not like horses, even before Dyanna’s death. He knows how to ride one, he just doesn’t trust a mode of transport that can think by itself.

Maekar is 100% the dad who said he didn’t want a dog. Though he tries to keep appearances, complaining that he has to pamper the dog because “no one else in this godsdamned house will” - everyone loves the dog.

He’s also the dad that falls asleep in front of the TV and when others turn it off he wakes up and says he was watching that.

After Maekar teaches Daeron how to drive, Baelor decides he will be the one teaching Aerion. After that Baelor pays for driving lessons for Aemon. Duncan teaches Daella, Aegon and Rhae.

Daeron gets his driver’s license disqualified by eighteen. After two drunk driving incidents. He never reapplies for one again.

Maekar thinks it was easier to convince Daeron to go to rehab, than to get Rhae to stop swearing.

Duncan is Aerion’s age but he’s the same year as Daeron also at Oxford Brooke.

Duncan is at Oxford Brookes University on a rugby scholarship, but he works as an assistant rugby trainer at the kids school to help pay for his living expenses.

Duncan is studying to become a public defender.

Daeron and Duncan don’t really know each other, but he looks an awful lot like a constant hallucination of Daeron’s. One that shoots his uncle Baelor every time he sees his uncle. So Daeron avoids him.

Daella has a crush on Duncan, Maekar hates it.

Aerion is on the Oxford Rugby team.

The summer of Daeron’s and Duncan’s first year of uni, Aegon runs away and makes it all the way to Gallway, where Duncan is from. Duncan is at his foster father’s, Arlan, funeral when Egg arrives.

The next school year Aerion gets into an awful fight with Duncan after Aerion tries to assault Tanselle after a game and Duncan defends her.

Daeron is supposed to be taking Egg to Gwin Ashford’s birthday party when the fight happens. But he had to stop at a McDonald’s because the hallucinations got too bad. He’s having a panic attack in loo while Egg plays in the park. No one calls Maekar.

Maekar is waiting for Daeron to drop Egg at Gwin Ashford’s birthday party when gets the call.

Both Aerion and Duncan end up in the hospital because of the fight.

Maekar pays out of pocket for Duncan’s and Tanselle’s medical expenses. He never tells them.

Maekar tries to get Oxford to not expel Aerion. Not because Aerion deserves it, but because Maekar feels he owes his children because he was a mess after Dyanna’s death.

Baelor who is standing in for his father on the Oxford board of trustees agrees with expelling Aerion. He is the deciding vote. It gathers media attention.

Aerion is expelled.

Maekar is mad at his brother, he knows Baelor asked to stand in for his father, because it would make him look good on the campaign. He doesn’t doubt that Baelor truly believes Aerion needed to suffer the consequences, but he also knows he would’ve stayed out of it if it had not served his campaign.

They never speak again. Because Maekar is mad that Baelor used his children for political gain. Not because he got his son expelled.

Maekar sends Aerion to India to an anger management course… he gets his diagnosis there, but he hides it.

Nannies never last more than a couple weeks. Duncan becomes the default babysitter for his three youngest children.

Baelor is killed by a deranged boy who thinks Aerion was in the right.

Maekar feels guilty as he feels he should just have let Oxford expel Aerion. It would’ve been easier on everybody.

Bloodraven, Baelor’s campaign manager, convinces Maekar to run in Baelor’s place and on Baelor’s government plan. Somehow he wins.

Maekar hates being PM, though he’s quite good at it.
