AJS 7R Boy Racer 1961. - source Moto Vitelloni - Wheels n' wings.
AJS from 1950s to early 1960s. Featuring models such as the 248 c.c. Model 14, 347 c.c. Model 18, and 498 c.c. Model 31.
AJS began as A.J. Stevens & Co. Ltd in Wolverhampton, England 🏴 . This is where they built their early models, including the Model D.
Few of the exceptional icons highlighting their noteworthiness : AJS Model 14 (250cc): 1958-1966, featured an air-cooled, four-stroke, 248cc single-cylinder engine with four-speed manual transmission. Was easy to start with impressive fuel economy, and fully-enclosed rear chain and praised for handling and comfort.
AJS Model 18 (350cc/500cc): A long-stroke single, the Model 18 (and its variations like the 18S) noted for reliability and ease of maintenance. The 1956 18CS featured redesigned, almost square 497cc engine with robust crankpin, while later models like 1964-1966 Statesman incorporated chassis and engine changes.
AJS Model 31 (650cc): In 1957, this model (and its Matchless twin, the G12) featured 646cc parallel twin engine producing around 35-43 horsepower. Focused on solidity and comfort, ideal for touring. Its 7-inch drum brakes were considered weak and needed meticulous maintenance for modern road use. The CSR (Competition/Sport/Road) variant offered a sportier experience.
Trivia 1:- In the AMC Era in 1931, the motorcycle assets were acquired by the Collier brothers (Matchless) and production shifted to the Matchless works in Plumstead, London. The AJS Model 16, 18, and other models were produced here.
Trivia 2:- After Norton-Villiers acquired AJS, some scramblers (like the Stormer) were produced in Andover, Hampshire, starting in 1970.
