Who Is More Likely To Be Shot by Police?
MedicalResearch.com Interview with:
Brianna Mills, PhD Research Scientist Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center University of Washington MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings? Response: We know that substance use, mental disorders, and arrest are markers of increased risk of firearm injury. However, many studies of firearm injury are limited in scope – looking only at one type of injury (assault-related, for example) and one type of data (often hospital records). Police shootings, although occurring with increasing frequency, have also received relatively less attention in research than other types of firearm injuries. We combined data from a variety of sources, including both hospital and arrest records, so we could present a more complete picture of firearm injuries in Seattle, including contacts with law enforcement and healthcare in the two years prior to injury. We subdivided substance use, mental disorder, and arrests into more specific categories to present a more nuanced look at how each category may indicate increased risk of a specific type of firearm injury (assault-related, self-inflicted, unintentional, and police intervention). We found that when you consider both arrest records and hospital records together a distinct pattern of prior contact emerges for people who were shot by police – they have arrest histories similar to people shot during an assault and hospital histories similar to people with self-inflicted firearm injuries. A majority of people shot during an assault or by police were either arrested or hospitalized in the two years prior to their injury. Compared to our control group, people shot by police were 22 times more likely to have a conduct disorder, 11 times more likely to have been diagnosed with a marijuana use disorder, and 7 times more likely to have a felony arrest, psychosis diagnosis, or depression/anxiety diagnosis. MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report? Response: For researchers, this study demonstrates the value of combining multiple sources of data in order to identify connections and distinctions between different types of firearm injuries. For law enforcement and healthcare professionals, our study shows how many firearm injuries occur after a series of encounters with both law enforcement and health care institutions. Each of these encounters represents a potential opportunity for intervention. Taking advantage of these opportunities requires recognizing someone is at increased risk and having focused, effective interventions available, particularly around connecting people with long-term support. MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work? Response: This study is a snapshot – 5 years of injuries in a single American city. We chose to work with types of data that are widely available because it’s important to replicate our study in other cities. Once we compare results with other cities we’ll have a much better grasp on which of our results are generalizable and which represent community-specific patterns. More broadly, combining multiple data sources and working with narrower, more specific variables leads to much more nuanced results. MedicalResearch.com: Is there anything else you would like to add? Response: Our findings shouldn’t be interpreted as evidence that being arrested or having a conduct disorder causes someone to be shot; these are non-causal markers of increased risk, not causal risk factors. We’re interested in collaborating with other researchers to replicate our study elsewhere. This study was part of my doctoral dissertation in the University of Washington Department of Epidemiology. Partial support came from a Shanahan Endowment Fellowship and a Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development research infrastructure grant, P2C HD042828, to the Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology at the University of Washington. We see it more and more: ads to quit smoking, billboards talking about healthy eating, Michelle Obama teaming up with NBA champs in support of Let’s Move! The push to move our country to eat better and exercise more is almost everywhere. Except, apparently, in some of the biggest cities in America.
I don’t really care much about love. Or being in love. I’m already in my fourth year second semester in electrical engineering, and honestly, I dont have much time for love.. I have guys around me. Yes. Guys. Plural it is.
The thing is C.. I liked him before (about a year ago), but then he ignored my efforts for him to notice me. December of 2012, he said that he’s court me… But up to now (July ’13),I still can’t find that “effort” that I want to see in someone that courts me. I am now starting to ignore him. I just don’t find myself in the near future with someone like him. I just don’t like him no more.
Then there’s J. he’s a common friend from my ex. They are almost the same. Maybe that’s the reason why I have fallen(?) for him that easy. He’s the same as Mark. But he’s also messed up like me. He came from a break-up from a long term relationship. I liked him. Liked. I saw things he does that I just can’t accept. Now, its getting awkward as he is my classmate in one of my courses. Whenever he looks at a girl or he recites or he shifts from the other side of the room (due to poor eyesight) I can’t help but notice his every move. L I don’t know if I have talked about E. But he is one of my closest friends that I have opened up with my inner most problems with my fam. We had this summer fling this April-May ’13. The reason I liked him? He’s a total gentleman. I don’t find this trait on the other guys in life.
AND NOW THERE’S A. A.. Someone who didn’t even took a second look if don’t call his name. It’s obvious he doesn’t like me. I’m the one who’s making the effort to talk to him. I’m the one staying up late coz he’s only online when it’s the wee hours of the night. I really don’t know much about him besides his program and his school and his church. I don’t know if he’s serious or what. The thing about A is… I like his personality. We (A & I) are going to watch a movie this Thursday. I’m about to go on a real date, one where I don’t know the person I’m going out. I want to know more about this guy.. And I’m willing to take the first step in this “relationship”. Its not my usual doing, Im more of a dalagang Filipina type of girl who just waits for the guy to make the first move. But not his one. I don’t know whats with him that made me change that. I’m usually the one making parinig and pasubali about my intentions with him.
He texted me earlier that we won’t be able to watch the movie coz he’s watching it with his family. I just told him that, “At least you’re not exchanging it for another girl. I’m okay with that. Besides there’s a lot of other movies we can watch” J
Wish me luck on Tuesday.
Our biggest challenge as a whole is coming, and we can't do anything but to go through with it. Stumbling and maybe some bickering would be inevitable but not destructive enough to ruin the foundation we have built almost 3 years ago. Although there was no verbal agreement, I believe we have each vowed to ourselves to not let this change anything.
This journey, on which most of us accepted to take, also entails sacrifice. A sacrifice each of us should sow in our hearts. Although I see that some of us may also desire it, we must evaluate that someone other than us has worked harder on it. Are we willing to be the one to take it away from them? Would we want to see them heartbroken, and if not, would we allow ourselves to face them knowing that though they may seem okay, they're crushed?
Of course I don't know what is everyone's mind right now. I just know that at the end of this tunnel is a stronger friendship.
Let Your will be done.

TUP guy: Spaaaaarks moment
I met this TUP Guy (TG), coz he cross enrolled this summer in my dearest school. We had the same course (Fluids), but i dropped that subject due to N number of absences because of events from SEM. The thing is, he is under Sir A of ME Dept. Being Sir A and I are close i often see him in his class (we fabricated our car in the same laboratory that Sir A and TG goes in. So.. I usually see him around every TTH.
First problem: Finding out TG's name.
Then one time, Sir A asked me if i could grade their projects (as a joke). i graded them. That was the time i saw his name. We (Sir A and I) get tot alked about how cute he was and how macho he is, sir A is gay. :))
Then i added him in facebook, and we've been chatmates eversince. Usually in the middle of the night. c(I'm always up late ngiht coz thats the time we do our work in SEM. I dunno why he is up that late.
Second prob: if TG has a girlfriend.
So one time he rants about how arte the project of Sir A is... Non-verbatim (NV).
TG: Ang hirap naman kase ng pinapagawa ni Sir A. Me: Arte mo. Edi pagawa mo sa girlfriend mo, o sa kapatid mong babae. TG: Wala akong GF. ME: *in my head* Shet, walang gilrfriend!
When i told Sir A about this, all that he said was "What a nice way to ask if he has a girlfrind or not. Double-use. And very subtle indeed." he even arrogantly told some of his students how good i am at stalking. HAHA.
Next problem, TG's fone number.
So, we kept on chatting in the wee hours of the night, we went thru every topic possible. I even had the urge to share with him some problems i'm having at home. Being the goody-good guy that he is (he's a christian, an active church goer) he adviced me things that i already know, i just need to hear it from somebody else. He had this problem of how he will enroll for the first semester if he hasn't gotten his grades from my school. Verbatim, nasa chat kase to.
Me: Sige, text na lang kita kapag may sumagot na dun sa pinost ko sa group sa FB ng school ko. TG: 0916******* Me: Ano yan? TG: Engineering ka ba talaga? Number ko yan. Pano mo ko itetext. Me: Ay oo nga, HASHTAGmejoshunga (Deep inside: NAKUHA KO DIN NUMBeR MO! HAHAHA) I was bored kanina, so i decided to txt him, "Goodnight *insert TG's full name here* :)" He replied, "Ba't mo alam?!" I was scared on his reaction, thus i replied instantly. After some minutes, I went online on facebook, and then he messaged me like this..
<
Then i hear Taylor Swift sing, "SPARKS FLY!" Thank you TG. You made my night a very happy ending. :)
Sarap balik-balikan.
Yung feeling na nakikipaghabulan ako sa mga bata. MASAYA! <3
Sobrang pagod = Sobrang saya.
Worth it ang pagod at gutom dahil masaya ka. <3
