Two years ago today I put @pixiep75 ‘s CPR skills to the test with a sudden (and unexplainable) cardiac arrest. She passed! And thankfully, follow up scans to monitor my heath revealed that I had cancer while still at an early and easily treatable stage. So to celebrate my bonus two years of life, I ran a 5K in support of @bravelikegabe. My story was a lucky one. My recovery, easy compared to most. My physical and mental scars, fading. My life, back to normal, or at least my “normal” — aside from yearly scans and such. This year, I haven’t had many opportunities to run with @mnbreweryrun series, but @thelabminnesota is a short jaunt from my place. So ran over to meet up with folks, did a semi-quick 5K, and then of course there was the beer. #mnvirtualchallenge Today was #longrunsaturday. Ran my usual route along the river. But, to mix things up on my long runs, I like to throw in some tempo-paced miles, which I did every third mile today. Now that all of the triathlon events I signed up for have either been canceled or deferred until next year, I figured it’s time to get back to #marathontraining. Lately I’ve felt like I’ve been running simply to run, with no goal or intention to motivate me, and while I’ve kept active, I have been feeling a bit sluggish and inefficient of late. So for the month of May, I’m going to use @mnbreweryrun series new #mnvirtualchallenge to refocus, get back on my training plan, and start running with a purpose. While it’s hard to know if there will be any events held in the near future, I’m targeting the Fargo Marathon, in late Aug, as my goal race. (Then maybe I could get in a fall marathon, too 😁) Today’s run was me getting back to basics. A long run focused, not on pace, but on keeping my lactate threshold heart rate down in zone 2, to build my endurance base. My plan called for 11-12 miles, but there’s this also the virtual 1/2 Ironman challenge this weekend, so ... So I did this slightly crazy thing—not that that’s unusual by any means. But to complete a #virtaulbeerrun challenge with the @mnbreweryrun series, I needed to run 4 5Ks today, to give me a total of 12 for the month of April. Not being one to take the easy way out, I turned the challenge into a bike tour of local taprooms. So I first biked to each one and then ran my 5K. The taprooms I visited: @ablebrewery @brokenclockbrew @56brewing @inboundbrewco In total, I biked nearly 30 miles and ran 12.4. Not bad for a pudgy old guy. Planned to do my 8th #virtualbeerrun for the @mnbreweryrun series today. This time at @lupulin_brewing, but first I needed to bike the 50+ miles to get there. Whew! And I still managed to run the 5K at my tempo pace.
