Trying to get better at/actually do some .... background designs? environment concepts? whatever they're called.
This it the living room of the underwater palace in Airius. Aka Trance's home. It was originally an indoor pond, but they replaced the water with seats because none of the public go down there anymore. The walls are made of blue, and white marble, and there's little strips of lights all along the bottom of the walls for nightlight.

-Wearing the same pattern on multiple articles of clothing (ie, clams on the robe and the waistband) is considered poor taste.
-All outfits have some sort of pants underneath
-Not wearing underclothes, which are always seen at least around the collar, is seen as provocative and gross. (This does not refer to underwear, that’s no one’s business if you’re wearing panties/briefs or not)
-They do have a lot of layers, but Airius is a very chilly nation. Averaging around 10-15C in the summer in the capital city, where these clothes are most common/accurate, so the layers don’t bother them.
-They do not have shoes. When there’s snow on the ground they have these suuuper fluffy fur ‘sock’ kind of footwear that has a waterproof layer between two layers of fur. They’re really warm and flexible, but are also still something that are able to be shifted away if needed.
-All clothing base shapes/cuts/shapes are unisex aside from maternity wear. What denotes the outfit as men’s or woman’s is the subject matter of the patterns on the clothes, if they have any.
Basic pattern categories:
Male: large fish, sea slugs, crab, shrimp, sun rays, clam, oyster, sea horse, willow tree, spineless urchin
Yoooo~ so I wanted to redesign Ourin’s royal attire now that I’ve gotten better at drawing and stuff, and while I was at it I thought I’d doodle some other aspects about Airius clothing culture. This is all common throughout the nation, though the rural areas may be a little different considering the distance away from the capital.
The notes on each pic are generally what marks them as more formal than the one below, with the royal attire being the most formal, and casual being the least formal. The sovereign’s royal attire is the more formal outfit in the nation, so no one else will be seen wearing something like that without getting into trouble. |D
It’s probably obvious, but I mostly used hanfu and kimono style clothing as references for them.
This took too long. |D
Wedding attire is considered between royal attire, and very formal attire, and is the highest level of formality that anyone other than the royal family will get to wear.
Whew, em okay 8'D guess I'll grab first post |D Not even sure if this'll go anywhere but may as well try right? |D
Sooo, the first baby I figured I'd go with was Trance, because he's older than Emi, but still one that I remember a lot of stuff about.
This turned out hella long, so 'read more' break |D The other people who post don't have to be this long, I just like to talk about my babies. |DDD
Thiiiis is the very first drawing I did of him waaay back in...2011 I think? April ish, maybe March. The drawing isn't dated, but his application for the TC group he was for was in March, 2011 so somewhere around there. |D
Look at iiit 8'D that was back when I did traditional art first and scanned it in to ink and color. (Because I was stupid and didn't force proportions on my tablet settings and the circles I was drawing turned into ovals. |D derp)
So you can see there wasn't much to start, but there's still a lot of differences there.
1. His name
He didn't have a middle name. 8'D That's right, when I first made him he actually wasn't a Prince. Just whatever the son of an Archduke is. 'Cause his daddy was always an Archduke, but I never decided that his mommy was a princess until later when I had already RPed a bit. I thought about making him a prince, but thought that something like that was way to over done and cliche so I tried to force myself not to do it. ...That worked well didn't it? |D Then I had to think of reasons why he would hide that aspect and a bunch of other things popped up because of that. Yeey. His name was always based off of the idea of "Trans era", the concept of something surviving past a single era of time. But Trans is a stupid name so it became Trance 8'D
2. His hair
Omg I'm almost too embarrassed to talk about this part because it was a really bad hairstyle X'DD You can't see it very well in the first drawing but he actually had a little stub of a ponytail. 8'D That's not that bad you say, but the thing was it wasn't a regular ponytail, more like some Japanese samurai rip off or something. I dunno but it was bad. X'D This is what it looked like:
Had to draw this just before writing all of this to show what it was like. |D But it's sooo baaad. It's ridiculous. Ugh. I'm sorry if some other character or person had this hairstyle and likes it, but I don't like it for him. |D Just no. I'm not even sure if he had the two tone hair in this version. I think he did, but not 100% sure.
3. His eyes
Not too much of a difference here, just a minor shape change to a sharper angle and round irises. Here's a comparison of the first drawing vs. the latest app image version.
4. The collar
The collar design didn't change, it was always a butterfly koi. Which was actually for a really lame reason. |D It didn't have anything to do with the Duke he was serving under, I just was on a kick about those fish and Trance has a 'fish' form so I slapped a butterfly koi on his collar. And he had a collar because it was cute and I made up a reason for it later. |'D
Close up of the collar:
As you can see the sketch is old and the graphite got smudged really bad. |D
5. The chains
Probably one of the attributes that a lot of people are curious about. (I got asked a lot of questions through the years, so I'm not just guessing) But serious, what's up with the chains?
Well the chains are actually, I'm pretty sure, the very first aspect I figured out for him. Even before his face and everything else. 8'D The origin of it was that I had recently gotten into 07 Ghost, and there's a couple episodes/chapters/sections/blah in the beginning where Teito is stuck with chains on his arms and legs for awhile and has to deal with working around that. I saw that, thought "I wonder what it would be like for a character to have to deal with having their hands chained like that for several years?" Wala~ There's Trance. |D
Extra:
The magic he had was just because I love cleric/healer classes, but I didn't want him to be helpless so I gave him ice magic too. And then everything else developed to explain and smooth together (smooth like gravel rocks slapped together with superglue) the different pieces I had. 8'D
This was the very first 'complete' draft of him (tehee, he used to be chubby because of my drawing style back then |'D)
