I am Nadine. I’m iRiE. I’m Sean. And despite what I feel about her, I’m still Jennifer. But most importantly at the end of every single day, I am Dolmiang. A Palauan. A Micronesian. A Pacific Island girl. I was raised by elders. I grew up with the elders of the community simply because my Mami’s job was a cook at the Koror Old Age Center, a sort of senior citizens’ recreational center. And they also delivered food for the local elders who remained home. I grew up in a van packed with all of their food. I watched my Mami as she went to each of their homes with their lunches. As I reflect on my childhood I realize how much of an impact growing up with the old and wise and watching my Mami help them - I realize now how all of that strongly impacted and shaped who I am today - the mind that I am, the heart that I am, the soul that I am. The path that I am. I see more than others. I feel more than others. I hear more than others. And - not in an egotistical way - I know and understand more than others. And sometimes - most times this becomes frustrating. Because some people I encounter in this life are still young - and still have many lifetimes of growth and learning to go. So some of what I say, what I do and the level of respect that I feel one should have for self, others and the whole of humanity many will not have - will not understand. And though I become angry, frustrated, irritated I have to remember who I am at the end of everyday. I am Dolmiang. Raised by elders. And I must always do my best to humble myself. But never lowering my self-worth - never submitting who I am. I was born into a matrilineal culture - one of the last remaining on this earth. And I must always know this inside. And must always live my everydays from that knowing. I am a woman.
