The 5th Wave

Could not put it down. Much better than the movie. Its funny and intriguing and engaging. I like the switching povs and the order in which the story was told.

I’m always looking for art that makes me feel alive but Bugonia didn’t get me there — it landed around a 5/10 on my ‘alive thermometer. Even though the classical music and corporate-dehumanization angle were cool, the movie gets too caught up in weirdness for weird’ s sake, and the late alien reveal didn’t help.

For me, the real emotional climax happened when Teddy died. Up to that point, he’d become the real villain of the movie — the torture, the paranoia, the way he spirals into conspiracy thinking (which started to weigh on me and annoy but maybe that meant actor did a good job?). Once he was gone, I felt like the film had already resolved itself (he dies thinking he is going to space). So when the story kept going and dropped the big alien reveal near the end, it didn’t land for me. The small audience I was with also started to get bored.

On top of the pacing issues, characters move through impossible situations with zero consequences, which breaks any sense of realism. You're telling me Teddy rode his bike super fast to the hospital (after his cousin just died), gets through security, is able to hook up anti freeze with no alarms, kills his mom, then bikes back all under one hour? This just seemed straight up bizarre. and when characters don’t react like real people, I can’t feel anything through them — it just starts to feel like the movie is asking me to believe things it hasn’t earned and that is lazy writing.
