Brisbane brings the heat.
It’s a warm Brisbane morning, all set for the first day of ‘The Meaning of Materials in Modern and Contemporary Art’, the 2012 AICCM Paintings Group + 20th Century in Symposium, held at the Gallery of Modern Art.
The day begins with registration, introduction, and a welcome from Maud Page, the Acting Deputy Director, Cultural and Collection Development at QAGOMA. Followed by not one, but two keynote talks on the topic ‘Contemporary Materials and Contemporary Concerns’, by: Jeremy Barns the Director of the National Museum of the Philippines, and Ana Labrador the Assistant Director of the National Museum of the Philippines.
After morning tea, the topic of ‘Contemporary Materials and Contemporary Concerns’ continues with talks by: Sabine Cotte (Paintings Conservator, Private Practice, Melbourne), Jenny O’Connell (Paintings Conservator, CCMC, University of Melbourne), Sharon Alcock (Paintings Conservator, National Gallery of Australia), and Ljiljana Puskar (Beamline Scientist IR, Australian Synchrotron).
After a lunch filled with discussion we return to begin the topic of ‘Understanding Materials of the Mid Twentieth Century: 1940 - 1970’, with talks by: Paula Dredge (PhD Candidate, University of Melbourne, Head of Paintings Conservation, Art Gallery of New South Wales), Vanessa Kowalski (Paintings Conservator, CCMC, University of Melbourne), Anne Carter (Paintings Conservator, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art), Sarah Hillary (Principal Conservator, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki), Helen Weidenhofer (Assistant Director, Paintings, Objects & Projects, Artlab Australia).
Then we break for afternoon tea and return to ‘Tools for Understanding Materials’, with short but sweet presentations by: Melina Glassons (PhD Candidate, ARC Centre of Excellence for Free Radical Chemistry and Biotechnology, University of Melbourne), Stefanie-Ann Alexander (PhD Candidate, ARC Centre of Excellence for Free Radical Chemistry and Biotechnology, University of Melbourne), Caroline Kyi (PhD Candidate, ARC Centre of Excellence for Free Radical Chemistry and Biotechnology, University of Melbourne, David Thurrowgood (Senior Conservator, Metals and Conservation Science at the National Gallery of Victoria).
The day wraps up with pre-dinner drinks and some quality conversation about conservation, followed by the symposium dinner to finish up day one.
