CHAPTER 30:

Staggering inside the building, Maki wipes rainwater from her face, rubbing her eyes. Behind her, she hears a door lock shut. As she blinks her vision clear, it takes her a moment to realise what’s wrong with the scene in front of her. It’s not the lack of dust or musty smell in the air, nor the hallway entry open in front of her, something strange going on just beyond the threshold. No, what hits her that something is very very wrong here, is that the lights are on.  Why is the electricity working here?  The electricity, it only works in …  As her eyes dart around, they finally comes to settle on a screen beside the entry to the hallway. A chill runs through her body, as if her blood has turned to slush in her veins.            King of Hearts:           Death By A Thousand Cuts.

CHAPTER 29:

As Yamato, Kuina and Ann cross the city towards Minato, the rain slows to a drizzle until it eventually stops completely. That is perhaps the only good thing that’s going on, though the sky is still grey. Yamato walks closest to the road, Kuina walks beside him and Ann beside her. In the corner of his eye, he keeps close watch on Kuina, his hand hovering out in case she buckles. He can see her face twitching with pain as she limps along. It’s clear that she’s in pain but she won’t say anything. He knows she’s tough, but he also knows that no matter what he says, she’s not going to take even a second to rest now that they’re so close.  Ann isn’t looking too good either. Worse than Kuina, in fact. The usual flat line of her mouth is looking more severe, her jaw clenching. Yamato doesn’t want to say anything and piss her off for making assumptions, but he thinks her injury is worse than she’s letting on.  Like Kuina, she’s pushing herself. He feels like he’s gotten off easy in the long run. His face hurts, he knows it’s going to scar, but he’s not limping, he’s not pale like Kuina and Ann. If it comes down to it, he might just have to take the lead in this game himself. Hearts are his specialty anyway, but even he has no clue what they’ll be facing.

CHAPTER 28:

It’s early in the morning. Rain is still coming down as Chishiya sits atop the roof of a car. It’s cold against his skin, dripping down his nape and into the shoulders of his jacket. He tilts his face towards the sky, feeling the raindrops, and sighs out a breath. His eyes slip closed. The King of Diamonds … Kuzuryu … that had been quite a surprise. Now, some manner of hours later since the game’s end, the man’s words are still ringing around in his head, bell-clear. For some reason he can’t fully understand, Chishiya feels envious.  In the end, as he sits in the rain, he doesn’t know what he should think, nor does he doesn’t know what his next decision should be.  Rain slips down his face as he takes a breath, opens his eyes.  “I wonder why …” he murmurs to no one in particular, “I feel like talking with somebody …”
