We are currently travelling, to go to my cousin's 21st tomorrow. Dogs couldn't come, so they are having a sleepover with one of our Hound friends! We've walked with her and her boy Nick many many times and know her pretty well. Certainly trust her with our beasties and we know Goofy gets along with Nick. Dropped them off this morning, and the day has gone well! She has kids which Nelly thinks is the best thing ever xD And Goofy has been having fun discovering Nick's toys and pulling one apart.. :P I'm like a mother whose kids have gone to their first sleepover xD I miss them already, but they couldn't be anywhere better. I got sent these photos from their day today. Gotta love Goofy posing and Nelly just doesn't care xD
Ummm exciting news!!!!! We are getting a last minute foster hound in 2 days!!!! There are seven greyhounds coming into foster here on Saturday. One of the foster carers that was lined up pulled out, and so we got asked if we would like to. Funny timing, because we'd actually been discussing fostering at some point in the future! Discussed with family, and they are okay with it! I was actually quite surprised! The hound in question is a black girl named Nelly (was Kelly, but we just got approval to change to Nelly). She's not yet 2 years old, trialled for racing but wasn't interested (so hopefully less prey drive than Goof xD). She's been in care for 2 weeks and is already settling in to pet life really well. She's still got plenty to learn about being a pet, but is apparently really relaxed and sweet and adjusting quickly. We've been told that her coat is pretty rough and she's a bit underweight. And she's cat friendly of course! Hopefully Goofy gets along with her! He's chill with all dogs he's met- usually a bit shy at first but then fine. The only time he's not been okay is when an excitable dog jumps on him.. this has happened twice and both times he's given a low warning growl. So hopefully she's not all excitable and jumpy xD And we will have to be careful with toys because I suspect if she tried to take one of his he would not be happy about it. So I'm thinking toys are kept away except for supervised play time? Anyhoo, this is super exciting! I'm a bit nervous about having two, but we've been assured it's really not much more work than one. We will have pretty much everything provided for her that we need, and vet bills are payed for. The only necessity we pay for is food, and then any extra things obviously. And foster caring isn't a permanent thing. If things don't work out, they'll be able to find another foster carer. And being cat friendly, she shouldn't take too long to find her forever home. So yep- surprise!! New dog coming!!
@mooseings duuuude, the support network here runs walks that a number of people bring their greyhounds to. The end of year walk last year was massive with like over 30 Greys!! I had a post with photos from it- did you see it??
So I’m now the AGSN’s official photographer or something like that.. Today I met with the main coordinator, the person who runs the website, and another co-ord who also does the profiles for the Hounds available for adoption (who I already know reasonably well). We had coffee at a cafe and talked photos and the website and dog profiling and an event on Australia Day coming up soon.. And goodness I felt like an actual adult and it was scary and exciting. They are such lovely people, and it was strange to be with Actual Proper Adults with Actual Proper Jobs and be treated as such too?? Like they aren’t family, or people I’ve known for a long time where the relationship is one of an adult and a child (not that they necessarily treat me as a child, but there’s the history of it). Nope, we were all adults talking important things, on the same level. I actually do have multiple proper adult friends, but the relationship is still different somehow? Most of them know me from band, and have known me from when I was just out of year 10. Or known me even longer than that. So I still notice a difference with this.
And you know when you are a newcomer to a group of people and they talk about things you don’t know about and you sit there awkwardly, not sure whether or not it’s your place to ask what it’s all about?? And then you end up saying nothing because you can’t decide, and you don’t want to risk it in case it’s weird, but then it’s super weird and awkward anyway because you are sitting in silence with not a clue while they discuss something, more or less ignoring you?? Well, I was afraid that was going to happen when they started discussing things not related to the photos and promo, but, it didn’t. It didn’t happen because they were good, thoughtful people and gave a quick explanation of what they were on about so I wasn’t left to sit, drowning in the anxiety and awkwardness of not knowing and not knowing what to do.
This sounds like I was dealing with it a lot better than I was though mind you.. I was, in reality, sitting there intimidated (even with no real reason to be), not really knowing what to do or say or how to act, acutely aware that I am 19 and they are all 30+, and that they have been involved with greyhounds and this group for at least a year (multiple for two of them), and that I have only been involved for a couple of months.. I think I did relatively okay though. I get the feeling they realise I’m quiet because I’m quiet, nervous, shy.. not because I’m not interested or am rude, or anything like that, which is always a possibility I feel.
But! The small little efforts of friendliness and engagement and going out of their way to make me feel welcome and not left out.. That was huge for me. And then the general feeling of openness and that I was no less than them… These things make such a difference. I notice them. And they matter.
As to what became of this meeting.. I’m going to take photos of the dogs in foster care so that they can have nice photos for their adoption profiles, both for the website and for upcoming events to advertise them at. Good photos can make a huge difference as to how much interest a profile gets. Catch your eye.. Stick in your head.. Show the dog off.. I may also be taking photos for the Australia Day event.. something about greyhounds through Australia’s history but we haven’t worked out how we are doing this exactly yet (possibly something to do with greyhounds dressed in different costumes to do with the different time periods..). I may also help out with the website, and I’ve generally been invited to be involved as much as I want and to create a role in the group if there’s something I want to do and I think needs doing (!?!?). Like that last part.. First off, like I’d ever be able to come up with something and have the confidence to do that, and secondly, what kind of trust do they have in me, someone they hardly know?? Me??? I’m barely an adult?? Yikes.
These people are wonderful, passionate, thoughtful and creative, and it’s very strange to think I will have something to do with them and to do with the group on a more formal basis.
It was also pretty cool to be ‘in the know’ and hear the things that are going on that they were discussing. All the goss.. ;)
