Honestly, I think Lily was just like Harry. Above average, did very well when she applied herself, got by on charm and likeability with teachers, was never anything *that* special. And that the one teacher who thought she was a total screaming genius was a notoriously shit judge of character who also thought her son was a genius because they were both scamming off Snape’s Potions work.
Teenage girls as popular and desirable as Lily are never, ever, the ones at the very top of the class like Hermione, because truly brilliant children are usually quite odd and struggle to relate to their peers.
But the whole point of Lily is that she isn’t all that special despite all the Virgin Mary iconography? She’s just human? She couldn’t defeat Voldemort with talent or knowledge, she could because she loved her baby. Severus redeeming himself isn’t because he loved this super special icon of worthiness, it’s down to his own capacity to love and act selflessly in honour of someone who couldn’t give him anything and treated him, lbr, as expendable. The people who loved her thought she was exceptional. But her impact is considerably lessened if she actually is exceptional. Her being mediocre is the reason it works, just as it works for Harry who can’t win against a far superior force without his love for his friends.
