interesting concept & examination on how drugs can evolve us and effect us in both positive and negative ways.
bradley cooper is dashing as always, and i do think he's a very talented actor (i loved seeing his depressed writer vs. his well-groomed and suave businessman).
i thought the idea of lying and drug abuse was good to explore, because it's highly relatable in today's society.
i think the film's biggest issues were that it felt like the story wanted to take off in three different directions at each act break
(act 1 - the set up and then growing addiction to drugs, act 2 - the new life that is completely separated from the previous one, act 3 - looking ahead, reaching for political goals).
i thought the film would've stuck with one of these ideas, but it instead tried to cram them all together, which wasn't bad, but it did add to the confusion of character motivation (the tan coat stalker, why the ex-brother-in-law was killed, etc.) and i thought perhaps it could've explained more in that vein.
the music and cinematography (and use of camera movement) were completely innovative and i highly enjoyed those aspects of the film. also i loved the desaturation of color when living normally versus the high saturation of color when on the drugs - it was a good visual distinction and helped signify the crossing of boundaries that was neither cliche nor particularly expected.
but i really did like the concept, i just wish they could've stayed on one of the veins and made it maybe a thriller about the drug world (what side effects struggled to do) or maybe a conspiracy theory of sorts?? i'm not sure.
the ending - that specific ending shot - was what fascinated me though because we see eddie (cooper) reassure his girlfriend lindy (abbie cornish) that he wasn't on drugs anymore? but his behavior in the scene, not to mention the lighting and color saturation, possibly implied otherwise. if it is true, and he was calling robert de niro's bluff by saying he was not on drugs anymore, i think the whole concept of dependency on drugs would be strengthened and provide an interesting insight into the world today where many people rely on (and are addicted to) drugs to remain stable.
anyway those are some thoughts. i thought the premise/idea was well thought out, but it tried to be several things it couldn't, and fell short of a few marks. but i did enjoy the very end and the social comments this film makes about our modern society and (again) its dependency on drugs for creative and intellectual stimulation.
so when jack questions dr. du maurier about her previous 'incident' with the so far unnamed patient, she mentions that him 'swallowing his tongue' is what saved her. so from a physical point of view, this could be true, because he would've choked on his own tongue and died (in a twisted way illustrated by what gideon did to his victims with their tongues on display). but can it also metaphorically mean that they kept their mouth shut about the situation? because the implication that i'm getting is that hannibal is the said unnamed patient and i just. i know she mentioned that hannibal recommended the person to her but i just GOT ALL THESE OVERTONES THAT IT WAS HANNIBAL HIMSELF?? especially when she told him about the deception/half-truths and just. yeah. i really want to see how that works out and how that has affected their relationship now (and when it's answered the situation will be shed in a new light). but yeah what do you guys think?? (also now that jack has see dr. du maurier that means she isn't a figment of hannibal's mind - i thought that interpretation was really neat and fitting but whatever.)
the parallels of the set ups with hannibal/will (long shot, sitting opposite one another, bed/table/etc. in the foreground) were BRILLIANT. it reflects the ending shot of the first episode because what lies between them, what connects them, is the experience/encounters of each other... the bed as a result of hannibal's manipulation, the desk because it is what he sits behind, the dinner table because they are sharing in a perverse sort of "communion" with one another. they are at opposite sides of the spectrum, but they are inverted and equal in that way. reflections of both the light and the dark.
speaking of light and dark, the ending scene with abigail and hannibal - the lighting was PERFECT... how hannibal was in complete darkness and how the shadows elongated his facial features, how his bone structure really does make his skull so evident. i could feel the hidden darkness (sorry word repetition but i can't think of anything else) in him and how it is slowly showing through the cracks of his "human suit". how he has been pulling the strings all along and that the entire drama of this series falls back into his cunning hands and just... the way he told abigail of his involvement and way - just the smoothness with how he said he wanted to see if she were to become like her father... hannibal is so obsessed with observing others and how they can succumb to their primal instincts and fall into the pattern of their "nature" vs. "nuture" environments... i don't even really know what i just said, but i am enthralled at how hannibal keeps shoving these people into situations in order to see how they react, because they are all some experiment, some animal he is toying with, poking and prodding until he gets the reaction he wants...
ugh will. w i l l. i actually just can't wait to see how he responds to figuring out hannibal's truth. and the teaser at the end for next week's episode may have actually killed me. because you can see the doubt he faces in himself, how he knows it can't be him, but how can it possibly be hannibal... the man he has grown to trust and accept as his friend, the man he has let in to his world... and to have that sort of relationship shatter - will is going to lose a lot of ground, and i just. i don't even want to think of how it's going to effect him. (it's also interesting to read 'red dragon' and note all of these things because i like that hannibal is taking a much darker interpretation of will and yeah. i can't wait until he meets molly and finally becomes somewhat... happy.)
hannibal YOU ARE BREAKING PATIENT/DOCTOR CONFIDENTIALITY BY PLAYING JACK THAT RECORDING AND WOW IT'S OUT OF CONTEXT, SNEAKY HANNIBAL. but no he is so cunning (another repeated word but it's so accurate) and how he is shifting all of this onto will in a perfectly calculated and strategic manner. and also wow that scene when will tells him that he's going to figure out the way the copy cat thinks and shit?? hannibal's face was PERFECT and i just adore dramatic irony okay.
wow i was really sad georgia died because eworiwerwe but also her death... i'm confused as to whether it was intentional? yes it was, right? i know her hair comb caused the static electricity but i feel like something was out of place? or it was just an accident and then natural catalyst to cause the events of the episode/will believing it was murder/etc. thoughts? clarification?
i'm running out of thoughts but w o w that episode 11/10. i also stopped breathing so that's always good because the tension. i basically died. the end.

I actually like seeing movies by myself. its pretty fun.
No I do too! Im a freak about movies tho, like I hate any outside noise and movement idk so it's best to go by myself because my friends are talky people lol. I just always get weird looks at the theater and so I'm always nervous about going because i can tell people judge me
