Multi-James Beard Award Winner, Restaurateur Drew Nieporent, was my boss at Maxwell’s Plum in NY almost 50 years ago, and he’s been one of my nearest and dearest ever since. Partners with Robert DeNiro in numerous restaurants over the past 35 years, Drew conceived the first Nobu. There are now 57 of them, worldwide. Founder and inspiration behind the Myriad Restaurant Group, which operates Tribeca Grill, Nobu New York City, Nobu Fifty Seven, Nobu London, Nobu Next Door, Bâtard, Porsche Grille at Citi Field, Crush Wine & Spirits, and The Daily Burger in Madison Square Garden, Drew’s restaurant partners have also included Bill Murray, Sean Penn, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Frances Ford Coppola, and Robin Williams, to name some. Drew’s owned 40 restaurants across the globe, and has been awarded multiple three star and two Michelin star ratings amongst them. He’s been a busy, busy man. Despite all that, we’ve managed to amass a passel of memories over the past four decades. 

As we weaved through his recently dropped, impossible to put down, wonderfully written memoir, I’m Not Trying to Be Difficult, which has one fab story after another, we shared a bunch of personal stories as only old friends can do. The chicken soup Drew made for me when I was sick, a Chateau Lafite Rothschild he served at a dinner he prepared for us in ’79, today worth more than some people earn in a year, a long held secret about it at last revealed, witnessing from the next table when he and DeNiro sealed their impending partnership, special access at a McCartney concert, and a fun followup Drew had two years ago… my first Springsteen show, and Drew’s 100 or so, with many other Bruce encounters and a magical dream come true told here, Neil Diamond, and our unique place in that scene, a great Jeter story, a fab Fillmore East, Elton John, Bill Graham tale, a dinner with JFK Jr and Carolyn Bessette, an almost helicopter ride, none of which are in the book, all deliciously entertaining. 

Whenever I see Drew, it’s as if no time has passed. This is one of my favorite sit-downs with one of my favorite people. Get his book, I promise he’ll feel like an old friend you adore, too. And when you’re in NY, don’t miss Nobu, my favorite restaurant, anywhere, and ask for Drew. He may just surprise you. Tell him Vicki sent you.

I’m Not Trying to be Difficult

Pals for close to half a century, I'm thrilled to sit down again, ten years after, with multiple James Beard Award Winner, Drew Nieporent. 

One of America's most respected and celebrated restaurateurs, Drew is the founder and inspiration behind the Myriad Restaurant Group, which operates Tribeca Grill, Nobu New York City, Nobu Fifty Seven, Nobu London, Nobu Next Door, Bâtard, Porsche Grille at Citi Field, Crush Wine & Spirits, and The Daily Burger in Madison Square Garden. 

Drew’s first restaurant, Montrachet, opened in 1985, earning three stars from The New York Times and kept that rating for 21 years. It reopened as Corton, maintaining its three New York Times stars and receiving two Michelin stars. In 2014, Drew reopened the space as Bâtard, earning three stars from The New York Times, New York Magazine, and a coveted Michelin star. Bâtard was awarded the number one spot on The New York Times' list of The 10 Best New Restaurants of 2014. In 2015, the restaurant won the James Beard award for Best New Restaurant. Having eaten at all of the incarnations, I can’t pick a favorite. They all shone brilliantly in their unique fashion. 

I was having a birthday dinner at Montrachet with my mother and best pal, Joanne Milazzo, at the table next to Toukie Smith and Robert DeNiro the evening he and Drew were celebrating their impending partnership. Bobby D and I had the same dessert, at the same time, with different messages inscribed with chocolate on the plates.

In 1990, with partner Robert De Niro and an all-star roster of investors including Bill Murray, Sean Penn, and Mikhail Baryshnikov, Tribeca Grill opened to national acclaim and continued to be one of New York's landmark restaurants until it closed last year. A classic New York institution, I can’t fathom a trip to the city without a meal there. Aside from insanely fabulous food, it houses the mahogany bar from Maxwell’s Plum, where Drew and I worked together 48 years ago. 

In 1994, again with partner Robert De Niro and sushi master Nobu Matsuhisa, Drew launched Nobu New York City to worldwide acclaim. Nobu NYC, Next Door Nobu, and Nobu Fifty Seven have all earned the coveted three-star rating from The New York Times. Nobu NYC was voted Best Restaurant in America by The James Beard Foundation. I have yet to visit NY and not share a meal with Drew at one of his Nobu’s. I dream of that sushi. 

Drew's put it all in his bestselling new book, I'm Not Trying to Be Difficult, which is incredibly difficult to put down. He's been killing it on the charts and on the circuit. It's a wonderfully written tome of life lived to the fullest. 

One of a kind, I've watched Drew rise from manager at Maxwell's Plum straight out of college to world-renowned restaurateur. And, he knows as much about rock 'n roll as he does about food. He set his sights on his mission and has continued to live and expand his dream. I can’t think of any of my heroes, in any field, that Drew doesn’t know, and who doesn’t love him.

There's no one better at what he does... as anyone who's frequented any of his restaurants can attest. One of my favorite people on the planet to hang with, I trust you'll feel in kind.

We sat through Animal House 2x the day it opened, saw McCartney and then Springsteen, but we’ll always have Neil Diamond!

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1994)

If you're looking for the definitive version of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, this isn’t it. But other than the actual book (let the nerds debate whether the 1818 or 1831 text is definitive), what could be? Even Bram Stoker’s Dracula is ultimately Francis Ford Coppola’s film, with changes made for commercial appeal and a new take on the material. The most faithful adaptation of any book is always an interpretation, as, by the nature of each medium, film deals with the external world through visuals, while prose explores the internal through the written word.

While this film has faced criticism for not being the "true-to-the-book" version of Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus that it was advertised as, the performances by Kenneth Branagh as Victor Frankenstein and Robert De Niro as the Creature are excellent. Both actors capture the essence of their characters from the novel as faithfully as I can imagine any performance doing.

Though the events of the book are chopped up, cut, rearranged, and stitched together with elements from the Universal Studios Frankenstein films, as well as its own ideas and aspects from other versions of the mythos, the result is an electrifying remix that combines iconic aspects of them all. You might say it creates new life from parts of a legend thought to be long dead. For instance, although the Bride of Frankenstein homage in the climax may not be true to the book, it rivals the "head-giving-head" scene from Re-Animator in its B-movie perversity while also marrying it to the grandiosity of an opera.
