ugh trying to figure out leo elster’s age is what keeps me awake at night

S A M E. i think at this point i may have to admit, though i love and admire vincebrack eternally, they may have skimped on the whole “figuring out a timeline” element of things

the way i see it, he cannot possibly be older than 22… and he can only be at the top of that bracket if max was created pretty soon after niska. max is written in a way that suggests he’s much less experienced than her, but then, they had different functions and ‘purposes’, quite apart from the things they went through after creation, so, maybe they’re closer in age than we think.

the one that puzzles me most though is karen. when, exactly, did she come on the scene? how much younger than max is she supposed to be? because i’ve read posts by people assuming that all the stuff with david revealing her/killing himself happened immediately prior to s1’s beginning, and that the others went on the run because david was no longer around to protect them. BUT this can’t be true because (1) karen used a dead name to make detective inspector out of nowhere, so she’s been on the force for a while and (2) george says leo’s too young to have known david, so… dude’s been dead some time. (or else george thinks leo’s like 12. he's lost perspective being so old himself. it's possible.)

so really why did they have to go on the run, after apparently living in safety for many years, while karen made her name in the outside world? was it ever explained how exactly they were found? (like maybe because there was legally no heir the house was just sold or something? but leo says in 1.1 “if it’s him, we run” so he did know someone was after them, assumedly hobb) or have they in fact been on the run for ages? did they just get really unlucky that one day in the woods?
