I made my own Nellie because I wanted a doll that looked more like the book illustrations than the movie version. I grew up with the books, and didn't see the movie until I was an adult, so the official Nellie doll didn't make sense to young me.

Nellie's Promise takes place after she met Samantha, and her entire AG collection is from after she was adopted by the wealthy Edwards'. I wanted to have some things that she would have worn prior to that period. (I'm still working - I want to make at least a couple of the illustrated outfits.)

My Nellie lives with her parents and little sisters in two rooms of a tenement building/settlement house in the immigrant section of Mount Bedford (despite the fact that her father, John, known as Jack, is a second generation American - his grandfather immigrated during the potato famine in 1849. Mam, Fionnuala , pronounced Finn-oola, is originally from Dublin, and came to the US when the family she worked for as a maid decided to emigrate). Nellie's father works as a horse-drawn cab driver and her mother does piecework at home, tatting lace for a factory that makes fancy garments. Neither are guaranteed a steady income. Bridget and Jenny help by handling the housework and hunting for free fuel or bits and pieces to sell to the rag and bone man. When Nellie isn't working, she helps too.
