It Was Good for Me to Be Afflicted
<You are my affliction >
I want to share my thoughts about a phrase that Count Orlok said which really struck me. The phrase; “You are my affliction” is a sentiment which encapsulates an extraordinary depth of emotional intensity—love, obsession, and pain intertwined. It doesn’t rely on elaborate stanzas or lengthy expressions but delivers its meaning with a raw, abridged and unfiltered essence of what love prevails. It claims, without hesitation, that the pain caused by this love (or person) is not only acknowledged but willingly embraced. Even at the price of oneself.
They say the truest form of love is born from vulnerability, requiring both humility and courage. It invites the possibility of suffering, yet the heart accepts it without resistance, saying, “Let it come, for I have allowed you to do this to me.” This phrase becomes a poignant acknowledgment of love’s duality— a choice to bear its beauty and its wounds, because the bond it offers is worth any sacrifice. I personally find this expression really beautiful, and offers a greater depth of meaning than how we usually affirm our love for one another.
(In the case of Count Orlok, it is no question that his fixation on Ellen is mere obsession. That being said, not everyone has an attractive obsession paired with vampiric hunger.)
