Nudibranch-Related Fact of the Day #7
There are four main types of nudibranch, Dorid, Aeolid, Arminid, and Dendronotid. Dorids are classified for their pronounced mantle and concentrated ring of gills around their anus.Â
Aeolids are classified for their cerata, which covers their back.
Arminids are classified for having their gills run along their sides, underneath the mantle.Â
Dendronotids are classified for having cerata like Aeolids, except they are much more complex and branchy.
Name: Phidiana hiltoni
My personal name: Hairy slug
Location: Central coast of California to Baja California, Mexico, Gulf of Mexico
Size: Up to 5 cm long
Diet: Feeds on hydroids
Interesting fact: This slug baby is anything but innocent; born with a fire in their soul, P. hiltoni is known for attacking other aeolids, including members of its own kind. Other hairy babies beware!!
