In estate planning, do you include all of your stuff?  I mean, EVERYTHING?  Well, yes.  There are a number of legal approaches to estate planning.  The simplest and most important is a General Durable Power of Attorney to appoint an agent if you become incapacitated.  Then a Will, so when you pass away YOU direct your property.  Medical Directives are important to make your own choices about treatment.  Trusts are important to protect assets, do Medicaid planning, and control property after death.

It is a lot to think about.  The thing is, estate planning is not that expensive and it provides you with the tools you need to make informed decisions and protect your loved ones.

If there is no legal plan in place, it’s left to the court to appoint the person to make decisions about your life and medical treatment on your behalf, and if you’re no longer with us, your property. I don’t know anyone who wants that!
