I’ve read quite a bit of queer fiction; some of it was bad, some of it was eh, some of it was awesome. This is mostly a list of ones that were Great, but some might only have vague summaries if I haven’t read them in a while.

Okay so my #1 fave of all time is Adaptation by Malinda Lo. There's two books in the series, I've read it like 3 times at least, and I'd read it again. It's my heart and soul.

A basic summary: Reese and David get in a crash by Area 51 and they're merged with alien DNA to save their lives. Now they're hybrids, and they've got empathy powers and shit. It's cool. Also, government conspiracies.

What's great about it: Bisexual female character as a main!! Aliens!!! Some are nonbinary aliens!!!!!! Also, there's a poly relationship in book 2!!

Fan Art – Sarah Tregay

A basic summary: Jamie is in his last year of high school and he’s fallen for his best friend. The girls in his art class are very determined to get them together.

What’s great about it: It’s really cute, and there is actual fan art haha (I need to reread this, sorry).

Girl Mans Up – M-E Girard

A basic summary: I don’t know how accurate of a summary I can give here, but it’s about a girl named Pen who doesn’t act feminine, so people think she’s trans, but she just wants to do her own thing? It’s really good so far and I’m not doing it justice with this summary.

What’s great about it: I actually just started this today, but I’m really enjoying it. It explores the concept of gender in a very interesting way, I feel like it’s gonna be really great.

Additional warnings: So far there’s been manipulative behavior as well as underage drug use.

Everything Leads to You – Lina LaCour

A basic summary: Emi is a set designer, and at an estate sale she finds a mysterious letter that leads her to Ava, the secret granddaughter of a famous actor.

What’s great about it: Beautifully written and a super cute romance!!

Symptoms of Being Human – Jeff Garvin

A basic summary: Riley is genderfluid and starts a blog about their experiences with gender, but the blog goes viral.

What’s great about it: Explains being genderfluid really well, Riley has a support group too and that’s A++

Additional warnings: Bullying, transphobia, hate crimes, I think there was a mention of suicide

I'll Give You the Sun – Jandy Nelson

A basic summary: Twins Jude and Noah are inseparable at thirteen, but after the death of their mother, they drift apart.

What’s great about it: This book is amazing. Noah tells the story of before they drifted apart, and Jude tells the present. They’re both artists, Noah is gay, this book is a gift.

Simon vs the Homosapien’s Agenda - Becky Albertalli

A basic summary: Simon is in the closet, and has been emailing this guy Blue about it. This jerkface finds the emails and tries to blackmail Simon into setting him up with Simon’s best friend, so Simon has to decide if he’s ready to come out and all that and the outing is BAD but the book is a good read.

What’s great about it: Simon and his pen pal are really gay and cute??? I didn’t do this justice with the summary sorry

Barry is so out.  So, so out.  (Just... coincidentally not when he’s on-screen.)  Wears T-shirts saying things like “Transgender Avenger” and “They told me I could be anything, so I became a man” and “nobody knows I”m a trans man”.  (They’re basically the only T-shirts he wears, actually - he got accustomed to button-downs and cardigans and sweatshirts before he got top surgery because they covered his chest better).  Marches in Pride (with Joe and Iris).  Was the president of his high school’s, and then college’s, GSA.  Introduces himself with pronouns half the time even though he passes and doesn’t have to.

The Flash suit is specifically designed to minimize his hips, although nothing can hide that bangin’ behind.

The STAR Labs sweatshirt hides his body shape really well too and he loves it.

(I mean, it takes a lot of confidence to wear a skintight bodysuit at the best of times, and when you’re trans it’s a lot harder, and he can do that, but sometimes it’s nice to just relax and hide in your sweatshirt.)

Came out to Iris first, obviously, when he was 13.  (Puberty made things pretty obvious to him.)

Came out to Joe a bit later, with Iris’s aid.  Joe initially worried it might just be related to Barry’s mental illness (like believing in the lightning man), but once he realized it wasn’t he was ultra-supportive.

Wants the Flash to come out as trans.  The others insist it would be bad for Secret Identity Reasons. Barry thinks it would be really important for there to be a visible trans superhero, though.  (Ollie’s also only out as queer in his non-hero identity, for the same reason.  Barry and Ollie argue about this frequently.)

Give me a character and I’ll tell you my headcanon for:

What they smell like: boy smells like mint u think someone with that Dedication to a Theme would not get minty deodorant and minty cologne and minty shampoo the boy is d e d i c a t e d to the ice

How they sleep (sleeping position, schedule, etc): he curls up! into a little tiny bundle! a tiny cold bundle! and he sleeps when he can - his lifestyle isn’t one for a regular schedule

What music they enjoy: fuck, i’ve been trying to figure this one out and dubious suggested classical for planning heists which i really like but also i want him to put bedroom hymns by florence and the machine on a playlist so like idk man. i think he secretly likes poppy shit because lisa made him listen to it so much when she was growing up and he just…got used to it…but he pretends he hates it all

How much time they spend getting ready every morning: like 2 seconds. he wears the same outfit like every day he just throws it on and walks out the door. 

Their favorite thing to collect: shiny things. jewelry, especially. some he gives to lisa, some he keeps for himself. he wants to wear rings more often, but he only starts getting more comfortable on the waverider near the end (*cries forever*) and he only had that one ring with him. 

Left or right-handed: right handed? 

Religion (if any): not religious. doesn’t like to celebrate holidays. holidays from his childhood left a bad taste in his mouth, because of his piece of shit father. 

Favorite sport: nothing really, but hockey is fun. all that ice, all that punching. those are some of his favorite things. 

Favorite touristy thing to do when traveling (museums, local food, sightseeing, etc): …stealing things that are relevant to the city he’s in…

Favorite kind of weather: SNOW do i even have to answer this obviously it’s snow 

A weird/obscure fear they have: not being in control. he has control issues, so, so many control issues oh my god. i don’t think he will do drugs or get too drunk because he refuses to not be in control of himself at all times, and he is so bad at letting other people take control of situations.

painting: in what ways are you creative? I used to play music and still love it. I like jewelry making, and making tape sculptures. I also like writing, and I aspire to one day know how to use photoshop!

freckles: what’s something that makes you happy? describe the first thing that comes to your head. friends! hanging out with them, talking with them, seeing them be happy, just. having them in my life brings me joy :))))
