{{ CHARACTER INFORMATION }}
CHARACTER NAME: Talon Naysmith
PRONOUNS: He/him
AGE: 30
ORIGIN: The Cursed One
FACE CLAIM: Milo Ventimiglia
QUOTE: I’ve seen injustice in the world and I’ve corrected it.
OCCUPATION: Researcher at BuzzNews // Bartender at Beacon Bar (Part-time)
PERSONALITY:
Empathetic: He learned from a young age that one shouldn’t judge someone’s story he knows nothing about. Growing up with his own struggles, Talon knows how to relate to others and the importance of listening without putting the focus on himself, and has been a driving factor in his demeanor that he knows makes him one of the good guys. As Pitch he knows he has to draw his figurative line in the sand. There is always going to be a morally grey area, but when innocent lives could be in danger there’s only so much he can excuse.
Intuitive: When push comes to shove he relies on his gut feeling more than reason and trusts himself enough to follow through. Talon will pick things up on cues or hints quickly or at least know what past experiences will benefit him in a present moment, maybe not always with positive results, but at least ones he was expecting. Seeing in perfect dark has its advantages, but even so Talon knows how effective trusting his own instincts over his senses during patrol can make the difference between a tough night and a rough night.
Protective: The saying of setting yourself on fire to keep the ones he loves warm is a notion that defines him to a fault. Sometimes biting off a little more than he can chew gets him in worse positions than he started, but he never bats an eye in doing so. While it gives him white-knight tendencies that can get him into hair situations, it’s a role he he gladly plays.
Bold: He speaks his mind, often without the filter he knows better to have. To be fair, he lets his mouth run much more when he’s not recognized, often saving his particularly cheesy one-liners he’s been stocking up for when he’s subduing criminals. Talon and Pitch both wear his opinion brazenly on his sleeve, the more polarising the more passionate he becomes. and in doing so puts himself of a position of confidence or more often ammunition to be used against him.
Stubborn: Perhaps it’s his older child syndrome speaking with the louder voice that always has to be right. It really boils down to a matter of pride. Even if he knows he’s wrong he’ll still stick to his opinion out of pride in the moment to have the last word before licking his wounds later. This can make him difficult to work with in a team setting, as he’s always sure his plan of action is always the best one to get the job done.
Hot-headed: Sometimes his passion and opinionated nature backfires on him, especially where’s enough testosterone filling the room. As Talon, the most he’ll do is grab someone by the shirt and speak through a clenched jaw as he is more the type to finish a fight than initiate one when he’s not Pitch. When he suits up it can be a different story, as he constantly has to keep himself in check. The trick now is making sure he stops himself before he punches faces into a pulp.
BIOGRAPHY:
At the time, the Basement wasn’t an ideal place for anyone who’s grown up in Newhaven to claim as their birthplace, but even before the renovations, Newhaven’s southern District has always been an endearing home for him. His parents were barely old enough to buy lottery tickets when news of his arrival surprised them, but despite doing everything they could to make ends meet, often burning the candle at both ends, they maintained a happy family unit that managed to keep their heads above water and give Talon a happy childhood even if it wasn’t as lavish as one from the Mayfields.
There was nothing out of the ordinary in Talon growing up. He mainly focused on keeping his grades and credentials as impressive as he could throughout his public schooling in an attempt to land himself a scholarship to keep his parents and himself out of debt while he went through university. His father would take jobs around the city and move them around different apartments in the Basement until they finally settled on a family home after the gentrification movement that was not only affordable, but comfortable enough that the Naysmiths made an addition to their family, another son and Talons little brother, whom he’s incredibly close to and protective of.
His young adult life for the most part was on a steady track. He may not have landed a full ride scholarship that he wanted, but he managed to land part-time work bartending at Beacon Bar to move himself into his own studio apartment with his not too far away from his family while he took classes at the Community College so he wouldn’t break the bank. Despite having a decent trajectory, tragedy struck when his father was gunned down in a mugging, devastating their family. It only added salt to the wound that there were no leads to who was responsible, and Talon did what made sense and moved back in with his mother and brother to help take care of them in his fathers abrupt and untimely absence. Knowing there was a dangerous financial void looming over his family, Talon took an internship at BuzzNews shortly after, managing to help keep his family’s heads above water. Showing enough promise in the field, he was promoted to a paid position in research, where he stays to this day.
While things were certainly looking up for him, Talon still felt incomplete from the lack of resolution in his father’s murder, and desperately craved retribution for it, righteous or otherwise. It was this that attracted Salem to him, a powerful witch who disguised herself as a helpless old woman walking home alone only to take advantage of his kindness and endowed him with his powers in a curse. He woke up the next morning fuzzy on the whole event… unbeknownst to him that his life as a Vigilante of Newhaven was set in motion.
Well-meaning as he may be, sometimes as Pitch, Talon can get a little carried away with how he treats armed thugs in any situation for his own personal reasons. Unfortunately it’s lately been the only side of his deeds his own boss Ricky Plaide likes to put on his Vigilante quizzes, gaining him a bit of a reputation as a hothead.
Even though his career moonlighting with his powers stemmed form selfish reasons, and he comes off cocky and aloof when he changes identities, Talon truly does believes in the best of the city and protecting it from those who would harm it despite what others might think of him. Now that Specturm is gone and ushered a way for the vigilantes to step up, he battles with himself whether or not to take up the mantle as the face of Newhaven’s salvation, knowing he may not be able to fit the shoes left behind to fill.
{{ VIGILANTE INFORMATION }}
VIGILANTE NAME: Pitch
PRONOUNS: He/him
APPEARANCE: Pitch uses a black modified one-piece wetsuit as his costume, that covers his entire body except for his face, where he keeps an open cowl made of a similar material. He uses aerodynamically designed tactical gloves and boots he’s fashioned into his suit to keep his hands and feet protected in both combat and traversal. The lightest and most visible part of his costume is the orange accent eye sigil that is inlayed and centered over his chest. He obscures his identity primarily with black eye mask that covers his face and cheekbones, that he further covers the open eye areas with black face paint. The main identifying part of him with his alter ego that he keeps visible is his hair, which retains its perpetual windswept shape while he’s out as a vigilante. The light but rigid modifications of his suit may lack in durability, meaning he relies much more on his own dexterity to get the upper hand on his foes.
SIGIL: An orange eye with three prongs coming from the top like a trident over a black and indigo field.
COLOUR SCHEME: MAIN: #000000 - Black, SECONDARY: #300560 - Indigo, ACCENT: #FFBF00 - Orange
FIGHTING STYLE: Pitch mainly focuses on disorienting his foes as his power allows him to move quickly around them and exploit weaknesses in large groups or one-on-one combat. Once he feels he has or is getting the upper hand, he relies on his street style of hand-to-hand combat.
CLASS TYPE: Offensive
POWER: Shadow Manipulation / Traversal
Talon has literal control of shadows with the advantage of being able to see in perfect darkness or choose to be completely undetectable while he’s in it. As long as a shadow is being cast, he’s able to manipulate it as though it had physical form. Drawing strength from darkness, if he’s indoors in a dark area, or outside during the night, he is physically stronger and moves much quicker. His powers grant him the ability to create projectiles or binds to use against thugs to subdue them, as well as platforms he can use himself to travel. His own shadow also has its own independent form of consciousness that can help him as a sixth sense if its feeling particularly helpful. This can be a double edged sword as the unpredictability of his own shadow’s consciousness forces him to course correct at inconvenient times during patrol.
He also has the ability to phase or swim through cast shadows that he can visibly see as if he were passing through thin veils or water, dubbing the space himself as “The Inbetween.” He uses his traversal ability through the Inbetween against aggressors by pulling them through along with him and letting them out somewhere else to give himself the tactical advantage of a fear factor due to the disorienting and often terrifying experience for those who aren’t prepared for it. While he can pull allies through as well to help give them an edge, he tries to avoid taking civilians through the Inbetween if he can help it due to the nature he uses it against his foes.
His powers aren’t without his faults. Manipulating and travelling through shadows are as taxing on his body as regular physical activity, and is not something he can do continuously without putting himself through great train depending on how much he tries to manipulate at a time. He also must be able to see the shadows he’s travelling through. Trying to do so will either result in jumping into a solid wall, or ending up inside of walls or trapping himself in his own Inbetween.
The fault to his abilities is light in the literal sense of the word. Since his own shadow has supernatural properties, he cannot manipulate it like he can regular shadows cast by bright lights, so if he’s caught in a spotlight or a well lit room or even a particularly sunny day at high noon, it renders him useless. Due to the nature of how his powers origins, Talon usually goes out of his way to avoid holy places and ceremonies, but he’s not even quite sure if it has any adverse effect on him.

{{ EXTRAS }}
HEADCANONS:
Family Man: It’s the reason he spends sometimes sleepless nights in the city turning bad guys into pulp. He already lost his father to the crime and danger in Newhaven, and would do anything to keep them out of harms way, even if it means jumping into the fire. He’s happy to be the main source of income since it means he can be sure they’re being taken care of. That being said, Talon certainly doesn’t flaunt the fact that he lives with them since he knows the implications are usually negative and he’s not fond of the conversations that usually follow.
Parkour!!: Talon’s always been on the leaner spectrum in build, and while learning to use his powers in traversal, he used his stature to his advantage and took an affinity to the art of getting to Point A to Point B with the path of least resistance. Mixing this art along with his shadow-walking makes the city a much smaller place with how mobile it allows him to be, not to mention he has a hell of a time doing it.
Thnks Fr th Mmrs: The perks of working at Beacon bar seem to be endless. Not only does he have the advantage of hearing whispers of the next moves of some crime rings, but he gets the wanted looks from the ladies in the process. He knows how to use his charm and good looks to his advantage, and thoroughly enjoys the attention it gets him. He doesn’t let it get much farther along than a few dates since usually the beds he leaves early in the morning aren’t shared with people he’s ready to take home to meet his family.
