WIP - Das verlorene Paradis - John Milton
(Paradise Lost)
Part 1
adhesive binding
I had Paradise Lost sitting on my shelve as a stack of loose sheets since forever. Time to do something about it (especially since it’s only a matter of time until I knock it over and can sort the sheets...).
The inside has Dorés illuminations for Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost‘ and each side shows a sort of art nouveau inspired flower motive.
That’s why I decided for a decorative paper along the lines of art nouveau too.
I mostly just take out all the materials I want to use and check how they look togehter. was the range of suiting endpapers I had around. Along with the range of fabric for the spine that got narrowed down quickly to the darker green one. I like how the colour impacts the whole perception of the decorative paper.
This time there are no signatures to sew though. The book had been in a square adhesive binding and already started bulging out at the fore edge wasn’t sitting well in the bookcovers anymore. That’s why I decided to replace the square binding with a rounded one. I learned two ways to do that. Either I make fan-adhesive binding, wait until the glue is not sticky anymore, round it gently with the flat of a hammer and weight it down to dry completely or I do the adhesive binding in an already rounded shape .
I guess that’s only possible with some extra equipment though. Certainly a ‘nice to have’ but no ‘must have’. Rounding the back with a hammer works just fine most of the time (if it doesn’t work, just clobber the damn thing until it’s soft and maleable, push it into a nicely rounded shape and give it some extra glue to keep it there).
Either way, the backing is only done after the book is in a rounded shape in order to support that shape. In my case that means I get to add the gauze right away.
Now it sits to dry and I think about whether or not I want to do some graphite edges and emboss them or perhaps try that mirror sheen I’ve never seen before. Possibly both, first the mirror sheen (which I will fuck up) and then do some blind tooling/embossing to hide the mess I made.
