Executive function related symptoms can manifest in depression, anxiety and other stress disorders. But unlike these conditions, EF deficits in a neurodivergent has always been an issue for them as far as they can remember. Some may cope during childhood because we have parents who settle all the nitty gritty, allowing us to get by with some achievements; just enough to make us look “put together”. Despite that, we have always somehow felt that things are a little tougher than it should be and for the life of us, we can’t figure out why. So when people say that they struggled and when they did this and that, they managed to overcome it and return to their previous state, I’m always like, what previous state do I even want to go back to? 😂 Neurodivergent conditions like ADHD and autism are neurodevelopmental and are present since childhood. Being diagnosed as adults doesn’t mean that we just got the symptoms. What it means is that our previous coping mechanisms and accommodations can no longer mask them. #adhd #adhdawareness #adhdmemes #adhdwomen #adhdsupport #adhdlife ##adhdexplained #adhdisreal #adhdstruggles #adhdhelp #neurodiversity #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #neurodiversesquad #autism #autismawareness #adhdautism https://www.instagram.com/p/CSittOahfh_/?utm_medium=tumblr
“green” rant
There are times when I feel like my whole personality is just a bundle of trauma responses. Not understanding why you behave a certain way despite not wanting to is definitely traumatic. Despite getting a diagnosis and/or medications, it’s still a uphill battle just to function. Even those diagnosed as children aren’t so lucky because the medical fraternity has only now started to recognize the debilitating effects of executive dysfunction and emotional dysregulation in ADHD. Most children with ADHD grow up similarly confused because they were not properly educated that ADHD is more than just hyperactivity. My psychiatrist was wise when he warned me not to overdo things after diagnosis. Obviously despite him saying that, I did the exact opposite and am currently undergoing a massive burnout. Take things slowly, you are unlearning a lifetime of toxic coping skills used to mask your ADHD. It’s not going to happen in days or weeks or even months. And that’s okay.. #adhd #adhdautism #adhdawarenessmonth #traumaresponse #traumarecovery https://www.instagram.com/p/CVKtmdbFV9R/?utm_medium=tumblr
This! This is why it’s not “social anxiety”. . . . It’s not that I’m afraid of the stress of change. I’m afraid that, with my current level of baseline stress, I won’t be able to cope with the added stress. . . . Unlike in social anxiety avoiding change doesn’t make things any better because I still have the baseline stress to deal with. Partner Communication
So lately my partner and I have been using this white board in our office to help us communicate better! We found we were really struggling to meet each other’s needs and read the other’s emotions.
We have 2 boxes:
1: Me! [insert three primitively drawn emojis and one-worded descriptors of emojis] Today I Need: [insert: Touch, Time, Service, Gifts, Encouragement, etc.]
2: Partner! [insert three emojis and descriptors] Today I Need: [insert same suggestions as above]
It’s like a cool little cheat sheet for the other’s feelings and needs of the day! We usually try to update it by noon since we aren’t always on the same sleep schedule. This seems to really help us, so hopefully it might also help someone else out there!
