OC October - Day 11: Family

I know I am super late with this, and it’s really rough and not cute, but a lot of stuff has come up in my life, so better late than never! I still plan on completeing the prompts for this month, just on a later schedule 🙏🏼

Okay, so, family. Esmé has a younger brother (age and design undecided/unfinished) who their father is grooming to take over the empire one day. Esmé has the birth right and should’ve already been engrained in the Imperial staff, however her father chooses to look over her, hoping the rest of the empire will as well and accept the fact that he’s breaking the law in not having her on the throne. That being said, she tries her hardest to prove herself to her father (not unlike Zuko I just realized). And while her brother may be a bit naive and unaware of her situation, she doesn’t hold anything against him.

Addilyn has two half siblings and three adopted ones. Most of them are younger than her (ages and designs also undecided). She also has a father (the king) and a stepmother. She gets along with all of them and loves her siblings with all her heart, even if she’s not always home with them.

He couldn’t help the soft chuckle as she stood there wide eyed and surprised, her hands trembling a little as she seemed like she was afraid. He slowly rose up to his feet and took a step towards her, watching her take a step back. He paused. That was an unexpected reaction but one he was sure to have expected. 

“You’re not dreamin’ Doll…”

He smiled gently and watched her reach out towards him, tears streaming down her face. “H-How…?” she breathed softly. 

He chuckled and shrugged his shoulders. “Astrals gave me a day to come see ya.” 

“I-I saw…Dino, I-I saw y-you–”

He watched her bite her lip then reach further, only to have is expression turn pained as her hand passed through him and she stopped again, her breath catching in her throat. He sighed, and smiled to her sheepishly. 

“They told me I could visit…but I couldn’t stay…”

His expression softened as she gently drew her hand back, bringing it close to her chest as more tears ran down her face. “…Astrals,” he breathed softly. “What I wouldn’t give to be able to wipe your tears away.”  and out of instinct he reached for her, his thumb passing over and through her cheek and he huffed. “I guess they’re a bit more cruel than I thought they’d be.” 

With a sigh he moved to stand next to her, his head tilting as he looked out on the horizon, smiling a bit more as the sun had just started to peek out over the edge of the water. 

“Ah, so he finally did it…”

He watched her turn, and heard her breath catch again as the sun started to warm her face. Her eyes fluttered shut as she took a deep breath in, which caused him to smile. He leaned over, close to her ear and whispered.

“Means my time is even shorter than I thought Doll…” 

When her eyes snapped open and she looked at him he gave her a bright smile. “Told ya, I’d be here to see the sunrise with ya, no matter when it exactly happened.”

“D-Dino.. n-no not again, this is so cruel…y-you can’t…”

“You’re doing just fine Doll without me.” he huffed out a laugh, pushing his hands into his pockets gently. “And now, I know you’ll be even safer, I can wait for ya the proper way.” 

Her brow furrowed. “The proper way?”

He smiled, giving her a teary smile before he turned to her and once more, reached up, and cupped her cheek, his breath catching as he felt her warm skin under his hand. He huffed out a bit of a laugh at that and gave her a nod. 

“Yeah, I’ll see you when it’s your time Doll. Promise.” he leaned in then and gently kissed her cheek, managing to kiss away her tears before he stepped back, brushing his thumb against her cheek again before he let his hand fall away.
