Dr. Tian Dayton's work is my favorite resource on family systems affected by addiction and alcoholism. Hers is most definitely worth the read for those, like me, whose lives are or have been punctuated by it. "Over time the cumulative stress of the sorts of relationship dynamics that surround addiction can be traumatic, and something inside of us changes [...] The booze or drug may not even be there, but the behaviors and attitudes we learned are still with us. And so is the hidden resentment, confusion and hurt." The addiction of a family member is a cumulative trauma, and those trauma symptoms in turn engender addiction. But there's so much hope, and that's what I really need right now.
