I was wondering if you could help me out. I tried to get a look as if she was underwater but I think the proportions are off in her face/ body and would like some help with the pose to make her look more âfluidâ and less stiff. Thank you!
Weightless poses can be really screwy since it manipulates our bodies into poses and bends of which we arenât all that used to seeing. In most poses, aside from perhaps sleeping poses, our body is always saddled with some degree of tension and gravity, which in one way or the other, keeps our posture looking varying degrees of uptight.Â
And if you study dynamic stylization in terms of posing, you âll hear people chant how -tension- is just about the holy grail in good posing.Â
This is where weightless poses can become difficult, as it removes all of the tension weâre used to depicting in our pieces. Meaning that no limb is hardly ever completely at level with the torso and that no joint is perfectly straight.Â
if youâre ever chilling in a bathtub, take a moment to watch how your body defaults to a certain behaviour. Your joints will, at rest, usually assume angles between 40 - 80-degree angles depending on their individual weight. Â
So as stated above, itâs all about the weight distribution of your characterâs body. the heavier the section, the deeper itâll sink from the surface. Areas such as the pelvis, the thighs and head will be the chunks dipping lowest. Your chest and stomach hold pockets of air, and therefore will raise itself from the other weighted chunks. Should the character happen to be drowning, and thusly have its lungs and stomach full of water, the torso will become the heaviest denominator and will drag the body down with itself first.Â
Arms and hands usually float either on level or above your core. Hair will, as already explained in your drawing, expand to its full volume around the head depending on whether or not its tied up, and its general density.Â

Hi, me again! I just want to know if there were any black/african american/poc newsies? It seems plausible but considering how discrimination and racism was a thing, thats where im confused. Love the blog!!!
Yes, there certainly were! Newsboys generally came from the lower classes of society, so the fact that there was racism would only lead to there being more Black/POC newsies. According to David Nasaw, many of the newsies were either first- or second-generation immigrants from many different countries.
Even though much of society was still racially segregated, the Newsboy Lodging House was explicitly not so, with children of all races and nationalities accepted so long as they could pay (or work off) the lodging fees. Note the Black boy in the back right of this drawing of boys playing dominoes in the Lodging House:Â
At least two of the strikers mentioned in articles at the time were also Black: William âCoonâ Reese, and âThe Black Wonderâ. If weâre expanding the parameters from Black only to all people of colour, there were even more newsies of colour, including the Indigenous âBob Indianâ Stone.
Itâs also worth considering that the definition of whiteness changes over time. At the turn of the century, Irish, Italian and Jewish immigrants would have all been considered people of colour. These three demographics together made up as much as 80% of New York newsboys according to (very rough) estimates at the time of the strike. (Trigger warnings for racist and ableist language in the source link)
So in short, yes, there were many people of colour working as newsboys at the turn of the century. Depending on your definition of âpeople of colourâ, it may have even been the majority of them.
Enjoy some newsies of colour:
Youâre right that this blog is a little bit white. Thank you for pointing that out. I enjoyed looking for these photos and I hope you like seeing them.
Well in that case surprise me with a 46, maybe prinxiety? (Cause I really enjoyed your True love gave to me fic)

âCan I kiss you right now?â
It was the time of year that all college students dreaded, hated, and killed a piece of their soul to complete: finals week.Â
It would probably be indicative by looking at their apartment; Logan had claimed the vast majority of the living room floor, notes and study maps and flash cards spread out in a wide abundance that only made sense to him. Patton had hold of the kitchen table and counters, where heâd stress-bake in the midst of cramming down any information he could. Â
This left Roman and Virgil to sprawl in their own rooms, or in the hallway, which they had; Roman was blankly reciting a sonnet, over and over and over, as Virgil had on his biggest headphones, attempting to block out everything in the world apart from his stats notes (he hated gen eds, he hated gen eds, he hated gen eds) and his practice worksheets.
And Roman. Admittedly, also Roman. Virgil couldnât spare any more of his thoughts to Roman this week, heâd already been driven nearly insane. Had it been a week? It felt much longer.
There was a tap on his shoulder, and Virgil moved his headphones off of one ear, looking at Roman in askance.
âPattonâs break timerâs going off,â Roman said. âItâs a long one, so. Kitchen?â
Patton, upon seeing how the various apartment residents could fall into states of general disrepair surrounding academics but especially finals week (Logan, especially) had set up a mandatory break system in the midst of their not-group studying methods. In the distance, he could hear Logan complaining (âI just have to finish this notecard set, Patton, really, Iâll be right thereââ)Â and he sighed, accepting Romanâs hand up, only to stagger when he stood.
Roman, still holding onto his hand, managed to catch him in his arms and grimaced. âFeet asleep?â
âFeet asleep,â Virgil agreed, attempting to stomp the feeling back into his toes, ignoring the sensation of pins and needles, and also trying to ignore Roman.
âNone of that,â Roman declared, and abruptly Virgil found himself in Romanâs arms, Romanâs arms bracketing his shoulders and knees, as Virgil clung to Romanâs shoulders in surprise.
âI told you to stop doing that,â Virgil said, flushing desperately as Roman cautiously picked his way around all the papers that would make an environmentalist weep.Â
âMm, and yet,â Roman said, as he swept into the kitchen, âI do not care.â
Virgil sighed, and allowed it, set down into his usual kitchen chair, trying his hardest not to burst into flames. Just in time to see Patton patiently pulling a still-complaining Logan by the hand to the table.
âRoman,â Patton said pleasantly over Loganâs huffing, âplease sit on my boyfriend to make sure he doesnât sneak back to astronomy.â
Logan glowered at Roman. âDonât you dare.â
âToo late,â Roman chirped, sprawling grandly across Loganâs lap, wrapping his arms around Loganâs neck. Relievingly, this left Virgil to look at Logan, and not at Roman. âI know who runs this household, Iâm doing as your boyfriend says.â
Patton smiled, tried to smooth down some of Loganâs tugged-on hair, and swept off to the kitchen.
Logan sighed, and grudgingly moved to support some of Romanâs weight so he could dramatically pose to his heartâs content, even as he was pinning Virgil with a look that said how are you in love with this.
A week ago, Virgil would have shrugged or scoffed. Now, after the whole fiasco, Virgil directed his bashful glance to the table. It was as much a mystery to him as it was to Logan.
âOkay, drink up, everyone, I want those waters done by the time break is over,â Patton declared, setting down four glasses already sweating with condensation. âAnd each of you are eating a sandwich, too, I know finals are stressful but Iâm not letting any of you faint from low blood sugar or dehydration. Peanut butter and jelly or grilled cheeses?â
Patton turned into the most cheerful, mother-henning drill sergeant during finals week. It just so happened that this year, Patton had gotten take all but two of his early, and as such could hyper-fixate on how the rest of them were running themselves ragged in between his stress-baking and studying.
They voted on peanut butter and jelly, and Patton casually forced Virgil to sit back down when he attempted to rise to help him, shoving the glass into his hands when he opened his mouth to protest.
âHydrate,â he said, serious tone only somewhat offset by the way he ruffled Virgilâs hair. âIâll be back in a⌠Jif-fy.â
Logan directed his groan into Romanâs shoulder as Patton giggled his way towards the counter.
Virgil did as Patton said, taking a sip, and surprising himself by how much he started to drink, like he had only noticed how dry his throat was when it was being quenched. Virgil resurfaced, and Roman dug his heels into Virgilâs thighs in a kind of reassuringly bruising way. If it had been over a week ago, Virgil would have shoved him off, or huffed about it. Now⌠now all Virgil could do was overanalyze what this meant.
Before last week, Virgil could have assumed that Roman was just being a nuisance and left it alone, with a bit of eyerolling. After last weekâwith the dramatic confession on both side, the agreement from both that they needed time to think, the way Virgilâs mind was sent constantly spinning any time he laid eyes on Roman, ever since that dayânow he could only wonder if Roman using him as a human footrest was a sign of affection, or if the pressure was meant to make Virgil move.
After a few minutes of silence, Patton swept back to the table with a plate teeming with sandwiches, tipping Roman out of Loganâs lap only to take his place there instead. Logan looked unusually blushy as Patton began to eat his sandwich with one hand and smooth Loganâs hair back down with the other.
Roman, meanwhile, did not budge his feet from Virgilâs lap, even as he was working to inhale three sandwiches at once. Patton kept on nudging sandwiches closer and closer to Virgil in a way that he probably thought was subtle, as he had kicked up a Feeding Virgil Campaign after he realized Virgil was perpetually underweight.
After everyone had eaten at least one sandwich, Patton brought over a tray of some of his stress-baked brownies, and then proceeded to sit on Logan as he tried to stealthily flip through a Quizlet notecard set on his phone.
âNo,â Patton said firmly, setting Loganâs phone out of his reach.
âButââ
âNo.â
Logan sulked.
Roman kicked Virgil, a little, and said, âAfter break, will you run lines with me, real quick?â
âYeah, all right,â Virgil said, reaching for his second brownie, acting like he was completely casual about this. âItâll get me out of looking at standard deviations.â
The timer went off, and Patton kissed Logan on the cheek before allowing him to dive headfirst back into his papers. Roman and Virgil wandered back to their hallway, and Virgil squinted at the lines Roman dropped into his hands.
âYou didnât tell me you were doing Pride and Prejudice.â
âItâs more of a personal project,â Roman said, twisting his hands together. âWould you read Lizzie?â
âYeah, sure,â Virgil said, and then squinted suspiciously at Roman. âWhat, no jokes about me being Darcy?â
Roman nodded pointedly to the script, tapping at where there was a little sticker flag noting where to begin.Â
Virgil sighed, and looked at the page, and then blinked. âBut this isââ
âVirgil,â Roman said, voice soft, and Virgil swallowed, before he spoke.
âNor I,â Roman recited, voice slightly deeper, the way it always did when he was enunciating carefully. âMy auntâŚâ
Virgil allowed himself a small smile, recalling this moment in the movie, his comfort movie, the one heâd put on whenever he was feeling sad. The one only Roman knew he loved. âYes, she was here.â
âHow can I ever make amends for such behavior?â Roman breathed, raspy and soft, and Virgil swallowed, directing his eyes to the lines. He couldnât discern what that look from Roman meant, if it was acting or reality, and VirgilâVirgil was starting to hope.
But he couldnât. So he stared at the paper instead. As if he needed lines for this movie.
âAfter what youâve done for Lydia and, I suspect, for Jane, it is I who should be making amends.â Virgil read flatly, with none of the tenderness this line implied. Despite just having hydrated, Virgilâs mouth was very dry.
âYou must know. Surely you must know it was all for you.â Roman murmured, and very suddenly his fingers were gently, gently brushing across Virgilâs knuckles from where he was gripping the paper hard enough to wrinkle it.Â
âYou are too generous to trifle with me.â
Romanâs fingers carefully, softly, entwined with Virgilâs, holding Virgilâs hand with both of his.Â
âI believe you spoke with my aunt last night and it has taught me to hope as Iâd scarcely allowed myself before,â Roman murmured, and Virgil was still staring at how Roman had his hand all wrapped up in both of his, how warm and dry Romanâs hands were, how so soft and gentle he was, like Virgil would startle and run if Roman raised his voice. Which wasnât that far off of an assumption, really.Â
âIf your feelings are still what they were last week, tell me so at once.âÂ
âRoman,â Virgil tried to say at last, finally looking up, and he nearly did startle when he saw the way Romanâs eyes were fixed on him, so soft and so honest that it stole whatever words Virgil was about to say right out of his mouth.Â
âMy affections and wishes have not changed,â Roman said, voice soft and urgent all at the same time. âBut one word from you will silence me forever. lf, however, your feelings have changedâŚâÂ
They havenât, Virgil wanted to say, I still want you, I stillâ
âI would have to tell you,â Roman whispered, and Virgil felt the absurd urge to laugh, thinking about the movie, that ridiculously romantic misty moor, and where he and Roman were, sitting amongst strewn study guides and Virgil was pretty sure he still had peanut butter on his face, but here Roman was, dramatic and romantic as ever.Â
âYou have bewitched me, body and soul, and I loveâŚâ Still looking Virgil in the eye, pressing a kiss to Virgilâs knuckles, soft and gentle.
âI loveâŚâ He breathed, and opened Virgilâs hand, kissing his palm, before folding it all back up again, a hand reaching to cup Virgilâs face.
âI love you,â He said earnest, staring into Virgilâs eyes. âAnd I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.â
âWell, then.â Virgil croaked out at last, staring at Roman still, unable to tear his gaze away, and Roman smiled.
âCan I kiss you?â He whispered, and at last, Virgil nodded.
Romanâs hands were cupping his face, and slow, careful, Romanâs lips pressed against Virgilâs. Virgil almost couldnât breathe, with how tender and soft he was. When Romanâs tongue brushed against Virgilâs bottom lip, Virgil couldnât help but gasp a little. Is this happening? Virgil wanted to ask, but he didnât want to deal with the reality where it wasnât. He wanted this one.
What felt like both too long and too short, at last, they broke apart, pressing their foreheads together, breathing in each otherâs space, Romanâs hands still cupping Virgilâs face, and Virgilâs heart fluttering ridiculously happy in his chest as his hands rested on the back of Romanâs neck, tentative and uncertain.
âYour hands are cold.â Roman said, and Virgil could hear the smile in his voice. Virgil couldnât help but laugh, giddy and bright.

Sorry about that, i should have specified đ . Important people and events would be nice to know. (Hopefully i was more specific)
I can certainly help with that!
Important people involved with the strike include:
Kid Blink - Grand Master Workman of the union and face of the strike
David Simmons - President of the union
Racetrack Higgins - Leader of the Brooklyn union
Annie Kelly - One of the only female strikers, who had a lot of influence and was widely beloved
William Randolph Hearst - Owner of the New York Journal
Joseph Pulitzer - Owner of the New York World
Don Carlos Seitz - Business Manager of the New York World who ran day-to-day operations during the strike era because Pulitzer was too sick to do it himself
You can find details about all the days in the strike in my âthis day in historyâ tag, but some of the most important events include:
July 18 - Long Island City declares a strike against the World and Journal
July 20 - Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Jersey City join the strike
July 24 - 5000 boys rally at Irving Hall
July 26 - Kid Blink and David Simmons are accused of betraying the strike
July 27 - Kid Blink is arrested for disturbing the peace
July 29 - The papers offer full returns on all unsold papers
July 31 - Three strike leaders are arrested (possibly falsely) for blackmail
Do you know why spot conlon wore pink suspenders? Everytime he's described it just says he's wearing pink suspenders and i was wondering if it meant something
Pink was a very popular colour for boys at the turn of the century. It was considered a more washed-out shade of red, which was associated with strength and masculinity. Spot Conlonâs pink suspenders would identify him as manly and powerful.
Howdy, so im writing an essay on the newsboy strike of 1899 for some apps and was wondering what important things should be in there? I dont want to stray from point, which is why/how it is important to us now.
I would love to give you some guidance, but I am unsure of what your question is. Are you looking for a list of significant events of the strike? Important facts not to miss? People you should mention? What specifically are you looking for?
