There’s an element of untapped potential in Jubilee’s powers that manifests under times of stress, almost like she’s a character in Dragon Ball Z or something. This went nowhere, of course, in the long term storytelling, as Jubilee pretty much only ever shot her little fireworks off here and there as far as I know. (Uncanny X-Men #258 – Feb 1990)

God damnit this new version of Psylocke is so hyper sexualized. It’s not enough to draw her with body dimensions that are unrealistic even for a hentai character, we’ve also got to show her butt ass naked and in the bathtub in half these scenes while she’s getting dominated by some male oppressor. It’s not like we’re showing Wolverine taking baths, and he probably needs one far more than Psylocke does. It’s sad to say, but I’m sure it’s this aesthetic that helped drive the sales of the Uncanny X-Men comic book to the heights it reached back in the 1990s. I’m all for sexuality in my media, but it’s nicer when it’s there with a purpose, like in Batman Returns where an evil penguin monster is horny as shit and wants to fuck everything. Wolverine, Psylocke, and Jubilee are able to escape from the Mandarin and the Hand when Psylocke enters Wolverine’s mind in an attempt to brainwash him which ends up short circuiting her own brainwashing, thus allowing her to regain all her former memories. And I do mean all her memories, as she seems to regain her original persona from before she entered the Siege Perilous. I guess that makes sense, since maybe she does a psychic download or something from Wolverine’s head, but none of the other X-Men who went through Siege Perilous have it this easy, as we’ll see shortly. In a scene that looks like it was ripped right out of the original 4 issue Wolverine mini-series, Wolverine cuts the shit out of a bunch of ninjas. This is the stuff Jim Lee signed up to draw right here, and it’s why Claremont’s ultimate direction for the series started meeting some resistance. Lee didn’t want to take the series in new directions. He wanted to draw the characters he knew and loved (such as Magneto as the red costume wearing super villain). And the more popular Lee’s artwork got, and the more it drove sales of the series into the stratosphere, the more power he was ultimately awarded. It’s a shame, and it’s a shame I’m not going to quit complaining about as I read through these final issues of Claremont’s Uncanny X-Men run. (Uncanny X-Men #257 – Jan 1990)
