Pics 1-2) from the morning of Jan 17 – our drive over Danseys Pass
On the 18th, we had our longest bike of the trip - 80k, mostly flat. It started with a beautiful initial 20k on Lake Pukaki, but then we had a boring and windy 18k on the Ohau Canal to Twizel for lunch. Then 12k on the Pukaki Flats, a pretty 8k on the Pukaki shore, and an extremely frustrating final 20k on a consistent slight uphill through heavy gravel to Braemar – a final challenge which took down a few of the crew. 7 hours of biking in all, leaving everyone exhausted.

We were surrounded by noisy sheep all evening, visible from one of the bedrooms (as modeled by Peter in pic 3) and audible everywhere.
On the morning of the 19th, barking dogs and whistling shepherds worked the sheep, waking everyone at dawn.

7-9) Jan 19, morning - Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook on our way via bus to the Aoraki/Mt. Cook National Park.
17 Jan 2018 (mostly) Backing up here to fill in a few missing days in the timeline... On the 17th we woke up in Ranfurly and biked on the Alps to Ocean Trail from Duntroon to Kurow for 28km. Then a bus to Omarama, then a 21k bike to our overnight stay on Lake Ohau at the Ohau Lodge. Pic 1) morning of the 16th - a rainbow in Te Anau 2) The "A2O" (Alps to Ocean) biking trail is very well developed and easy to follow On this day, we biked it "backward" (Ocean to Alps). 3-8) we had a long afternoon break at the Ohau Lodge, and I took a long lakefront walk before dinner. 9) The Ohau Lodge - the world's most picturesque ping pong parlor. 15 Jan 2018 Another long day, but this time with less activity and more sights. 1) A Takahe bird in Te Anau (not actual size) 2) We drove the Heritage Highway (route 94) from Te Anau to Milford Sound, stopping here for pictures in Eglinton Valley 3) Mirror Lakes in the Fiordland National Park 4) a wild kea entertained cars waiting to enter the Homer Tunnel on the Heritage Highway 5) falls outside the mouth of the Homer Tunnel 6) inside the Homer Tunnel, a single-lane 1.2km journey which goes steeply downhill. Our drivers blasted "Highway to Hell," which timed our entrance and exit almost perfectly. 7-9) a pit stop at "The Chasm" just south of the Milford Sound 10) The view after exiting the Homer Tunnel

A busy few days!
Jan 9 and 10 were non-stop rain in Franz Josef, yet we persisted.
The skies cleared for biking and hiking further south on the afternoon of the 11th and all day on the 12th.
