It’s not surprising that Trump was acquitted in the Senate. The numbers were clearly in his favor, and from the very onset of the trial republicans made it clear that they would not act with integrity. Remember, that McConnell said before the trial began that he would not be impartial and “was not trying to give him a fair trial.” 

What has frightened me the most is that for the majority of my life I’ve watched Republicans, and conservative counter agencies, reach toward new heights of dishonest and corruption for the purpose of “winning” the game of politics. It started in the Clinton administration. Conservatives were rabid with conspiracy theories, and this has become a common feature of their official party. From the sham impeachment they ran on Clinton, to sabotaging ACA, to denying Global Warming, to refusing to seat Judge Garner, to defending a traitor in the white house, this party has become completely predictable in aligning themselves with corruption. 

The damage of this decision is that more than ever before we are not a government of mixed individual representatives of the people, we are a nation of one party against the other. Worst of all, one party has steadily set the precedent that facts, laws, justice, and truth are all simply tools for them to achieve their self-serving goals. A democracy cannot function if half of our government is committed to power over freedom. 

I see only three options in our coming future. 1. We fall into decay as corruption fully takes over our nation like Russia. 2. We use every inch of democratic power left to bring government reform. 3. We crumble into civil war. 

There is no scenario where allowing things to continue as they are will lead to a safe, happy, and free life for Americans. Although, our left wing candidates have been focusing on economic justice and social justice, that is actually not where our focus should be. Our number one goal needs to be to address big money in political campaigns and to end Republican efforts to fix elections. By this I am referring to Gerrymandering, voter purges, obstacles to voting, and closing of voting locations. 

If our elections do not function then nothing else matters. We know they are cheating and they need to held accountable. More than that, we need structural changes to our democracy that cut out their ability to cheat in the future. There are three simple changes to be made that will secure our elections. 1. Make all adult citizens instantly registered to vote. No more manipulation or obstacles to voter registration. 2. Make it mandatory that all district lines be drawn fairly by mathematicians. No politician should ever be involved in drawing district lines, because the very idea lacks integrity.3. Abolish the Electoral College. In the vote for the presidency, every person should get one vote, and everyone’s votes should be equal. It should simply be a matter of numbers and nothing else. The only use we have for the EC is to stop figures like Trump from taking power, and they failed tremendously. 

There are other changes we could make, but these three changes will finally level the playing field. This is what we need to push politicians to do, because nothing will be fixable in the future if we don’t have a free democracy, and I would say that our democracy has never reached it’s full potential.
