Western Sahara Spiny Mouse Acomys airensis

Found in arid regions in southern Mauritania, Mali and Niger. The Western Saharan spiny mouse is terrestrial and mainly nocturnal, although some have been recorded as active during the day. It probably rests in cracks and crevices in rocks rather than burrowing.

Cape Spiny Mouse Acomys subspinosus

Found in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The cape spiny mouse contributes significantly to the pollination of Protea humiflora, and in turn gains the food resources that enable winter breeding.

Percival's Spiny Mouse Acomys percivali

It is found in Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Uganda. Its natural habitats are dry savanna, shrubland, and rocky areas. It is one of two known species of mammals capable of completely regenerating damaged tissue, including hair follicles, skin, sweat glands, fur and cartilage.

Golden Spiny Mouse Acomys russatus

The golden spiny mouse thrives in dry, hot deserts and is common in Egypt and much of the Middle East, including Jordan, Israel, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. Their metabolic rate is much slower than other animals of their size, so they are unable to maintain a viable body temperature in colder environments. Their coarse, inflexible fur is thought to protect from predation.
