land of the lost : 2011 feb 2
I am playing an album called "Static and Stars - look what you made me do" by Jairus Dathan Smith. He gave me this CD at a show or maybe a party of some sort. I think it might have been "Ackbash," (a show and a party) at the (now defunct) Jolly Inn, 2008 and he had been in a band called Human Genome Project, that played that night with my band Serpentone, except he had already left that band and was just watching the show.
The folded tagboard container has a color photo scan glued to the front and another on the back. The title is hand-written in sharpie. Inside are two discs, one spattered white on black, and one pure back, and a xeroxed sheet with background information on each track. The splattered CD is called "analogue" because "These songs were written originally on analogue machines," and the black CD is called "digital" because "These songs were written originally recorded on digital devices." (sic)
The xeroxed liner notes indicate that Dathan was in the Prids at one time, as well as many other bands (currently The Soft Tags, I think), and has house-shared with other notable Portland musicians such as Amoree Lovell and Mistina Keith. There are some instrumental contributions here by other musicians; it's not clear though, exactly what and how much.
Out of all the CDs that someone has randomly handed me, this one is definitely a favorite.
Then, after a rather awkward transition (because I missed #14 on "digital") a few songs from a recent Failing Records compilation given to me by Lauren K. Newman of Palo Verde at a recent show. Played The Prids "One Thousand Five," Drats!!! "Real-Life Frogger," Thee Headliners "Sturggeon" and Palo Verde "The Absurd Man."
