This was the first project I got to complete in my ART 309 Printmaking class. This is the full edition of 10 with an up close image of the first print in the edition. Here is the artist statement for this piece:
Good or Bad?
Do we as humans truly know the difference between good and bad? We all have our own personal beliefs and morals when it comes to this topic. This leads to countless arguments over what is truly bad and what is truly good. We argue about this so much that we tend to lose sight of what we truly believe and become confused. The further we travel down this rabbit hole, the more confusing this topic becomes. What we were once able to decipher between we no longer can due to our minds being obscured by the opinions of others. What was once black and white has become unclear and grey. Each side of good and bad has now become a mixture of both and we begin to wonder what is actually clear. What is good, what is bad? This piece is centered around the obscurity of good and bad. Each side is personified by a winged unicorn that is either good or bad. Through the states I illustrate the above story to bring the viewer to the end result. The mixed and greyed view of what is good and what is bad. The top winged unicorn is bigger and slightly taking over the bottom one to show the imbalance of how we see this topic. One side will always outweigh the other despite if it’s the one we perceive to be “good”.
Overall, I really enjoyed this process and having the opportunity to work with etching. This process was done with acid etching. We used Ferric Chloride to etch in and neutralized the acid with a mixture of water and baking soda. I mainly used hard ground to draw in to and then soaked each plate for about 15-20 minutes. We had to do this 10 different times to create 10 different states documenting each change. Those states are in a previous post and showcases that gradual overtime change. This process was one I really enjoyed and I hope to be able to use it again in the future.
