Final Project: Reduction Print
This is the final project I have done for my ART 309 class this semester. We were given different options on what we could do, but I really wanted to do the reduction lino cut project. This project I did entirely at home since our campus is closed due to Covid-19. I fortunately had a kit to take home to use to when working on this project. I have previous posts that share my process and the items I used to create these. Below is the artist statement for the piece.
2020 Summer Fashion
I have always been fascinated by plague masks. Their original use was to help protect people from a plague that killed thousands. People would also wear them to help drown out the smell of death. I never thought I’d live in a world where these masks would come back into ‘fashion’. 2020 has been a victim to a new virus known as Covid-19. This virus has taken thousands of lives so far and is still on the move. It is causing a lot of pain and suffering for everyone, so safety precautions have been put in place to help aid and slow the spread. People are expected to wear masks when they are out to help keep themselves safe. Thus, plague masks are slowly making their comeback and in a variety of colors this time. Primary colors are summer colors and this mask is made for that 2020 summer look. Dive into your 2020 summer quarantine with this colorful plague mask that will help keep you safe while showing off those summer vibes in the comfort of your backyard.
Overall, I really enjoyed creating this piece. There are something I wish I could add more to (like adding more shadow to define the mask more), but I love this current end result. I am glad I am able to vent how I feel through my art and this process allowed me to show some of that.
