Seriously calling things cultural appropriation when they aren’t cultural appropriation is fucked up. Here’s why- firstly it makes it harder to identify real instances of the phenomenon, and that in turn allows real appropriation to continue to go unchallenged. Secondly it places an invidious burden of uncertainty on artists about what is and is not appropriative and what may or may not offend people.
Increasingly artists are being bullied and browbeaten into fearing offence. This is censorship, dressed up as trigger warnings and sensitivity. Artists should feel free to explore whatever imagery and ideas they desire. If those ideas or images offend anyone so be it. Art isn’t about confirming you in how you feel and making you feel good, it’s about whatever the artist in question intended it to be about and the life the work develops with its viewers. No artist should feel constrained from using imagery of any kind if they feel their work requires it.
Cultural appropriation takes place in a very different context and under very different processes. Confusing artistic expression through the use of imagery from any cultural source with appropriation of culture which ends with devaluation of the loaned culture is foolish and dangerous.
