you got hate???? for what?????
I did! I received a fair amount of hate for my portrayal of Remus and Sirius in my muggle AU fanfic titled A Love Like the Movies. Some were hateful comments, but the real tipping point for me was when I stumbled across a comment section on marauderstok where my fic was heavily criticized for my character portrayals.
The main topic was Sirius being a top. I guess there's a large sub-section of this fandom that finds the concept of Top!Sirius completely unacceptable and worthy of criticism. But this didn't bother me. I was trying to be deliberately subversive by making Sirius fem, short, and a top, and I expected some pushback.
The thing that bothered me was the hate I received for Remus. I adore Remus, he is my ultimate comfort character, my absolute favorite character of all time, and I tend to write him more in line with his canon counterpart. So when I started getting hate for characterizing him as "too soft", I almost left the fandom entirely. My version of Remus was directly compared to one certain (very popular) portrayal of him, and the general consensus in this comment section was that that portrayal was the more realistic and "correct" depiction of Remus while mine was mocked and insulted.

i adore your characterizations of all characters and was so pleasantly surprised with how you did regulus in both (as a sister, siblings relationships always gets me) and well, I just enjoyed both stories a lot, a lot and I hope you get to finish them soon and that no more fandom nonsense gets to you and can't wait to read the rest of them!! 🩷 (hopefully hoping for a happy ending in both 😁)

I think I've reached a point, finally, where the fandom drama doesn't affect me anymore. It was very upsetting at first, of course, to see my work publicly criticized because some of the mainstream folks in this fandom can't stand any characterization for the Marauders that doesn't fit in their personal little box. I started writing these fics by hand in notebooks for myself during the pandemic and I wasn't even going to share them originally. But I was really proud of them and decided to type them out to share with the fandom. I've been writing fanfic since I was 12 but I hadn't published anything for several years before I posted Moon and Tides & A Love Like the Movies on ao3.
I have never experienced anything like the hate I have seen in the Marauders fandom in any other fandom I've ever been a part of. I had to get marauderstok off of my tiktok algorithm because of how incredibly toxic they are over there. But at the end of the day, I wrote these fics for me and if other people resonate with my work, yay! If not, that's fine too. If anonymous trolls feel the need to shit on my work, I just delete their comments now.
And YES! I fully intend on happy endings for both fics! I put these characters through too much to not give them a well-deserved happily ever after 😁
