Patton sighed, settling his chin in his hands. He grinned as below him Virgil threw his head back in laughter. Patton kicked his feet back and forth as Roman slugged Virgil in the shoulder. The action did nothing to dampen Virgilās amusement and Patton wished that the fond smile Virgil sent Roman was directed at him.
āAh, I see that you have resumed this foolishness.ā Patton turned and waved at Logan with enough force that his friend reached out to keep him from tumbling over the edge of the balcony. Patton grinned at the look on Loganās face. He reached out to pull Logan down with him. He found himself being hauled to his feet instead, stumbling as he tried to get his feet under him.
āThis has got to stop,ā Logan continued, tugging him back inside. āThe lovesick pining makes me want to bash my head in and if I have to watch you stare at Virgilās back like some sort of dog one more time, I will not be held responsible for what I do.ā
āAwwww Logan,ā Patton cooed, āJust because you need to paw-se, maybe spend some time with Roman! Doesnāt mean that I need to do anything about Virgil!ā
Logan shot him a dirty look. Patton giggled, slipping his arm through Loganās so that they were walking side by side towards the door. Logan rolled his eyes. Patton pretended not to see it, leaning into the warmth of his best friend.
āFirst of all,ā Logan said, pausing at the doorway long enough to grab Pattonās scarf. Patton leaned down so that Logan could wrap it carefully around his neck. āI do not need to spend time with Roman of all people. He is nothing short of infuriating.ā
āYou certainly talk about him alot for someone you supposedly hate!ā Patton pointed out, stuffing his hat into his coat pocket before reaching for the doorknob. Loganās hand shot out, wrapping around his wrist to stop him. Patton startled, wide eyes turning to meet Loganās frown.
āAnd second,ā Logan continued as if Patton hadnāt spoken. āYou only bring my relationship or lack thereof with Roman up when you want to avoid the subject of your crush on Virgil.ā
Patton laughed nervously. His eyes dropped away from Loganās face. His stomach twisted itself into knots at the look in Loganās eyes anyway. The serious expression that felt like Logan was trying to take him apart like some sort of puzzle.
āItās not a crush!ā Patton protested. He took his hand back, crossing his arms over his chest. A defensive stance more than anything else.
āYou spend hours staring at him. Your smile softens whenever he talks to you. If thereās an opportunity to pair up you choose always Virgil.ā Logan listed off and Patton flinched. His hands fisted into his sleeves, trying to drown out the words that fell from Loganās lips. āYour face flushes when Virgil laughs. Iām certain that your heart skips a beat whenever he walks into the room, and you never stop touching him.ā
Patton felt his shoulders climb towards his ears. His fingers tingled from the force of his grip. He watched golden leaves fall outside their window, spreading beauty across the campus. Maybe if he tried hard enough Logan would grab coffee with him instead of talking about this.
āBut I donāt want to kiss him,ā his voice cracked. He stumbled over his words, struggling to explain to Logan why he was wrong. āI donāt-ā
Loganās hand touched his gently, and Patton jumped at the sudden warmth. Logan swept a thumb over the back of his hand before reaching up to grip Pattonās face. Tears welled in Pattonās eyes as Logan looked at him fiercely.
āYou still think youāre broken.ā Logan didnāt ask him. He simply leaned forward with the force of his words. āYou are still listening to your parents when they are such clear imbeciles who have no understanding of the world today.ā Patton took a shuddering breath as Loganās voice softened. āLove is love, Pat. Sexual attraction or the lack of it does not mean that you love him any less.ā
āLogan,ā Patton whispered, pressing a hand to his mouth to hold back sobs. Logan swiped at his tears, tired and loving.
āPatton,ā he echoed. āThere is nothing wrong with being asexual. You have a right to love just as much as the rest of us. If Virgil doesnāt understand that, then he is not worth your time. So talk to him.ā
āTalk to me about what?ā
Patton jumped at Virgilās voice, stumbling back away from Logan in his surprise. His hands shook as terror lanced through his chest. He wasnāt ready. His breath caught as he tried to picture the look on Virgilās face when he learned that Patton loved him but couldnāt love him enough. The disgust, but even more painful than that, the disappointment. The offers to help figure out what would fix the problem.
His legs buckled. He couldnāt keep track of the hands that tried to help him, only that they were too much. He slammed into the wall as he tried to get away from them. Star danced across his eyes, from the impact or his lack of oxygen, Patton couldnāt tell.
Voices flew over him. In one ear and out the other as Logan had always told him. Logan was going to tell Virgil- No, no Logan wouldnāt tell Virgil without Pattonās permission. He wasnāt like Pattonās parents. But he wanted Patton to tell Virgil. Patton wanted to, gods, he wanted to tell Virgil and be in love.
He just wasnāt. He was but he wasnāt and he hated it. He didnāt make sense-
A hand rested on his chest carefully. Patton jolted as he realized that he had squeezed his eyes shut somewhere between his sobs. The hand didnāt retract simply pressing against his heaving chest even harder. A second one grabbed his fingers and pressed them to the slow steady breathing of their owner.
Gradually, Virgilās voice made it through the buzzing of Pattonās ears.
ā-just like that Pat, breathe with me, just like that, in for four, youāre doing great.ā Patton latched onto his voice, dragging himself to shore with it. He blinked rapidly. His eyelids felt sticky with tears, and he reached a shaky hand up to swipe at them.
āPatton?ā Virgil asked quietly, āAre you back with me?ā
Patton nodded, face flushing at how close they were pressed together. Virgilās knees rested against his own. Panic reared its head again at their position and his breathing hitched.
āHey, hey, hey,ā Virgil said gently, squeezing the hand he had pressed to his chest. Patton marveled at the feel of his heartbeat. āNone of that. Youāre fine, Pat. Youāre safe, I promise. You donāt have to tell me anything that you donāt want to.ā
Patton dropped his eyes, counting the number of times his shoelaces looped back over themselves. Heād rather knot think of talking to Virgil about his feelings. He scrubbed at his face again, trying to buy himself time. Not that he needed it, but sitting there while others looked after him had always felt awkward. He was the father figure after all.
Feeling crept into his fingers before thoughts of Logan returned as well. Logan had been there too. His head jerked up, looking for his best friend. Virgil shifted to the side so that Patton could have a better view of Logan hovering a few steps away from them.
Patton searched Loganās eyes carefully. He took note of the carefully clasped hands, the stiff way that Logan stood. Patton bit the inside of his cheek, trying not to let reassurances fall from his lips already. Logan would claim he was deflecting. Logan would be at least half right.
Logan looked him squarely in the eye and Patton watched him relax. Watched his eyes go soft and comforting in the same way he had when Patton came out to him. Logan tilted his head to the side, a quiet check on if Patton wanted him to stick around. Patton almost wanted to reach out and have Logan pull him close as he had so long ago.
He closed his eyes and nodded just once. Maybe it was time. If only to get it off his chest. He had thought he was past this point, but two steps forward one step back tended to be a favorite tactic in their friend group it seemed. He opened his eyes. He stared at the spot that Logan had been and tried to draw courage from the fact that Logan at least, would never judge him.
Virgil craned his head to look at the empty dorm as well.
āWell,ā Virgil said carefully. Patton tried not to fidget as Virgil looked back at him. Virgilās hand tightened in his. Patton wanted to wipe the crease from his brow and promise that Virgil had done nothing wrong. Virgil wasnāt the problem. Patton was.
āI-ā Patton licked his lips as his voice cracked.
āYou donāt have to say anything, Patton,ā Virgil cut in quickly. Pattonās heart sank as Virgil didnāt meet his eyes. He knew what Virgil would be thinking, and he reached out to tap Virgilās cheek.
āI want to,ā he finally whispered. He tugged his mouth into a sheepish grin. āWell, less want and more need to, or maybe want and need? Logan would know the difference-ā
āPatton,ā Virgil cut him off gently, āYouāre starting to ramble there buddy.ā
āRight. Right,ā Patton let out a sharp breath and gathered his thoughts. He tried to think of how to explain his parents, his fear of the way that he loved others. He didnāt think there was any way to without Virgil trying to take the nearest kitchen knife and driving back to their hometown.
Best to just follow Virgilās example then.
āIām asexual,ā he blurted and squeezed his eyes shut. Silence fell. Patton tried his best not to tremble. He held onto the fact that this was Virgil. Virgil would never judge him. Right?
(He had thought the same of his parents at one point, after all.)
āOk, no I donāt get it,ā Virgil finally said. Patton peeled one eye open and started at Virgilās face. Virgil glared at the ground, gripping Pattonās hand even tighter. āI canāt figure out when I said something that would make you have a panic attack over being asexual.ā
āIt wasnāt you,ā Patton whispered. Virgilās hand spasmed and his lips pursed. Patton bit back a giggle as Virgil muttered something about āfucking aphobes.ā Patton took a deep breath and leaned in until he rested his head against Virgilās shoulder. Virgilās hands shifted, one still hanging on to Pattonās like he would disappear if he let go.
He rested the other on the back of Pattonās neck and just let the two of them breathe.
Patton breathed in Virgilās scent, the dry paint that clung to his hoodie from art classes. He brought his arms up around Virgilās waist, and for the first time in a long while, felt safe. He breathed in. He breathed out.
āI love you,ā he whispered.
Virgil froze.
Patton held his breath as Virgil pulled him back so that he could search his eyes. The look on Virgilās face melted into something bright and goofy that Patton wanted to keep there forever. He leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss to Pattonās forehead.
āI love you too,ā Virgil whispered, and Pattonās heart soared.
Pace Yourself; an ace Patton fic Ok so I might make more of this, depending on if this goes well. This was tons of fun to write, if a little challenging. If you are ace I would be honored to get some feedback to improve this! warnings: toxic family, homophobia/anything lgbt phobia, self hatred, thoughts that aces/aros are not lgbt, swearing, I think thatās all. word count: 1179
It was hard for him. He put on a face, he said he loved everyone, so no one would look deeper into him, to see that he was different. That he was an abomination in his familyās eyes. That he was wrong. And he hated it. He wished that he wasnāt who he was, that he was able to seem normal to his parents, but he couldnāt, that wasnāt who he was, and he will never be that. But as he was on his way to his first day at his new college campus, he was in awe at how many people were waving flags for pride month. He wanted to be like them, but Patton Rivera wasnāt ever going to be like them, he didnāt belong in the community anyways, heād seen plenty of posts on Tumblr about how asexuality was wrong and wasnāt welcome with the LGBT+ community. So, he gripped his bags tighter and walked faster to his new room.
His phone started buzzing and as soon as he answered he had a voice shouting in his ear.
āPATTON PATTON WEāRE ROOMMATES PATTON WHERE ARE YOU COME ON THE ORIENTATION IS HAPPENING IN AN HOUR AND WE STILL NEED TO EAT AND CHANGE!!!!!!! PATTON!!!ā
When he heard the voice of his childhood friend he knew he was in for a treat. He had known for a good two years that Roman was going to this college, one a few states away from their home, but didnāt know himself until a few months ago that he would as well. To know that he would be rooming with his best friend was probably the best news since finding out he had been accepted. The man started running towards his dorm room as fast as he could.
Ā Later during the day, the boys were wandering around the campus when Patton had seen someone wearing familiar colors. They were in a commons, and the ace was seated on the stairs, with a similar looking man standing next to the stair case. In fact, they looked very similar to Roman and Patton. He normally wouldnāt have done anything, considering the fact that he was so far in the closet that he could have been some sort of Narnia, but the man was not only wearing his colors, but he was surrounded with multiple people in aro colors, and they were all in the plaza, where everyone could see.
The group all had their hair dyed the colors of their flags and dressed in matching outfits. The one with ace colors had long fringe and a big baggy jacket that was black with a purple and grey lining. His feet were moving before his brain could process it, and his mouth flying before he could control it.
āhow can you all be out? I-I thought aces and aros werenāt welcome in the LGBT community? I- this wasnāt because- Iām- you arenāt bad or wrong, I just, everything I see says that aces and aros were just confused or immature, how can you do it? I- nevermind Iām just-you guys look really nice I need to- uh, go-ā
āhey. Calm down there dude, its fine. Sit down a bit, your friend can join tooā the two stopped in their tracks and sat in front of the older students. āthe things saying aces and aros arenāt āwelcomeā are bullshit. Just like gay transphobes arenāt part of the community, neither are those who try to say that the absence of romantic or sexual attraction. They are assholes who donāt deserve to be around the LGBT community. You arenāt confused or immature. You might still not be certain on which label fits, or maybe you arenāt comfortable with labels. That doesnāt invalidate how you feel. Also, thanks, the hair took hours.ā The smile coming from the man-made Patton feel safe.
āIām-I uh, Iām p-Patton Rivera, Iām brand new so I uh, hi!!! Whatās your name?ā most of the people dispersed aside from the man and one glasses clad aro who didnāt seem like he was going anywhere.
āoh yeah, heh, Iām Virgil sanders, this is my twin; Logan. Whoās your friend? He looks like a princey.ā Virgilās brother kneed him, before sitting down next to him. āheās not much one for talking. He thinks princey is interesting.ā
āFalsehood!ā shouted the man, logan, indignantly.
As soon as Virgil finished, Pattonās mother rang. āhello mother dear. Yes, Iām safe⦠y-es Iām going to the local church tomorrow⦠yes, I will uh, hook up with some lady while Iām here⦠I know you want grandchildren mom⦠yes, I, I wouldnāt think of attending the uh, homosexual parade against god⦠obviously theyāre con-confused, its-itās not natural I know⦠please donāt come and check up on me, I have Roman, and Iām almost 20⦠Roman is not a bad influence mother. Heās been my friend since pre-k Iām not abandoning him⦠heās literally right next to me mother would you like to talk to him?ā at this point Virgil grabbed the phone with a strangled gasp coming from Patton.
āhello maāam. This is a friend of your son, coming in with a PSA that you donāt own him⦠really? Seems pretty threatening to me⦠he canāt formulate a sentence⦠why yes, I am celebrating pride, Iām glad you brought that up! It seems to me that your son would be a heck of a lot happier without the preaching that homosexuality et cetera is wrong⦠heās 20 you canāt forbid him from doing anything. Including what sounds like you wanting him to abandon his friend⦠are you funding his college? Oh no? then explain why he needs to follow your rules⦠exactly, would you like to apologize to your son? Welcome to twenty gay-teen maāam⦠Iām here for the next three years, test me⦠ok cool, bye!ā
Patton stared horrified at the man. Virgil handed him back his phone with a shrug.
āthat should keep her off your back. Sorry bout that, it was wrong of me, but I hate hearing people having to talk to smallminded people and pretend they agree. No one should ever be spoken to that way. So as an adult youāre free to be you, so what are you? You seem pretty interested in the pride decorations, and you walked up to us, so its obviously not just the bright colors.ā
Patton looked over at Roman, who had been the quietest heād ever heard him. āIām uh, I think Iām panromantic asexual. Not sure specifically what kind of ace, but yeah. Thank you. I- I really just want to start over here. I donāt think itāll be too soon, but I just want to stop hating who I am.ā
The smiles exchanged felt like a promise. The four of them together against the homophobic agenda. When Virgil spoke again they knew it was going to be a good year.
ādonāt worry about it pat. The best way to survive college is to pace yourself and get some good friends. Youāve already got one of those things.ā
So, as my ace Patton fic is still somehow getting notes, I'm gonna psa real quick.
What Virgil did was wrong and potentially dangerous. Please never ever think that what he did was ok. He could have endangered Patton.
I'm not gonna make him be in danger, his mom is gonna be a jerk still but she won't hurt Patton. But just because I painted that picture, doesn't make it the norm or ok.
Tl:dr: Virgil didn't do the right thing in my fic. He should have known better, but he didn't. And I personally am not gonna bring that up again, because Patton was in fact safe and had wanted to tell his mother off before.
