I think they’re nanobots? And even though hanzo thinks they’re magical, time travel is a thing in ow so like it’s possible that somehow the technology was transferred back in time

Nanobots seem to be the general consensus on unexplained things, yeah. I don’t know anything about nanobots, but I’d be interested to dwell deeper into this.

Are the tattoos (supposing Genji also has one, which he may have in his back according to some speculation) relevant to the dragons’ functioning or just for symbolic purposes?

In game Hanzo’s dragon comes from the arrow, but in the Dragons-short (which would be more canon) they come from his arm, the arrow only guides them: Is there something on/inside Hanzo’s (and Genji’s) skin to make the dragons?

If so when/how were they implemented? (when did they get their tattoos in general?)

Is this technology developed in the clan or has it been stolen? How can they ensure only Shimada clan people use it? (aside from literally putting this stuff in them?) How exactly is Genji able to control Hanzo’s dragons too in the Dragons short?

What is the dragons’ actual effect on a human body? How do they hurt people?

This and much more in my frustrated question corner.

Seeing that OW-universe has managed to create robots with souls, I don’t think time travel is even necessary for acquiring nanobots (though that would be interesting). Nanobots are probably the answer to all the unanswered OW questions. What’s Zenyatta’s ult? Nanobots. Who’s in charge of Talon? Nanobots. What’s under Reaper’s mask? Nanobots. Case closed. Everyone go home.

It seems that the dragons have been part of the Shimada clan’s folk-stories for a long time. Perhaps there has even been legends of people controlling dragons, and so when it came time to get their assassin ways up to date, what better way to link tradition to modern times than literally continuing it.

As for what Hanzo believes/knows his dragons to be. I don’t think he explicitly states that he believes them to be supernatural (feel free to correct me if anyone has definite information). Him knowing them to be technology doesn’t necessarily take away from believing (/knowing) them to be “spirit dragons” or that they are his birthright and that his family is the only one who can control them.
