This style is a throwback to the way I used to paint. I’m finding myself drawn back to that style, except that now I am applying much more paint than I ever did before. It’s fun and exciting to put it all together, and then to step back and enjoy the movement and voice of the piece. This 24” x 96” painting is a throwback to a previous time, and I’m painting it for a special project. Only a couple of years ago, I used paints differently than I do now: I would apply many layers of bright colors to the canvas, using various techniques: I used to start with poured paints and then I applied more colors in varying opacities, by brush. I painted in color groupings. Working in this project, it feels like I’m re-wiring my brain, so that it processes what I’m doing differently... Now that I’ve gathered momentum, I feel unstoppable! I suppose this feeling is why many artists (including myself) paint in series. For this reason, I may create a few more pieces in this genre, once this one is done. It’s as though I have “trained” my brain to paint a certain way: like a physical workout, the first time is the most challenging, but then the flow comes more naturally, as I continue to practice it.
