Goodness isn't dependent on evil. 

I've always been bothered by the idea that Good isn't good except in contrast with Evil. I've even heard Christians assert that without Evil there can be no Good. That's not Christianity, that's Dualism. 

First of all, if Goodness was dependent on Evil, then Evil would be serving and contributing to Goodness, which would mean that it was a type or a component of Goodness. Evil is good? That's cyclical nonsense. 

Before anything else existed, God was already good. Indeed He was already Goodness. (John 1) He didn't create the universe so that He could be better than everything else that existed, in order to rest on the seventh day and say "Finally I'm good, at least when compared to that old serpent."  Instead He created the universe because He was already good, and He saw fit to create other things that could share in the awesomeness of His Goodness. 

It's true that the possibility of Evil exists as a corollary, a bi-product, of humans' ability to remain with or to reject God (Genesis 3). But that's very different from the idea that Goodness is not itself unless viewed in contrast with Evil. Goodness isn't relative.
