autdhd and new things
second archery lesson coming up later today, and yes we have been online a lot finding out about suitable bows for our mutant body, and ye gods there are so many different styles of "horse bow" (a more generic term these days that seems to include any simple bow that isnt "handed") and in the end we'll probably end up strongly swayed by aesthetics, once we get help with the right length and draw weight
and we don't even really know what we're doing at all yet, all we do know is that while a standard recurve bow is actually possible for our right arm to hold up, it's not really sustainable, it's only just okay (and sure, our arm will get stronger, but it's also very possible for us to hurt our shoulder by overdoing it, as certain muscles have to do the work of ones that are missing - especially the major pectoral)
and the adhd part of this is we desperately don't want to get too invested and then fall off the end of that initial high, like we have with so many other things we've picked up - so we're really trying to be chill about it
and it definitely helps that there are some cool women archers in our local club, including one of the coaches, and our beginners' group is four women and at least one nonbinary person (us) as well as men, and ages ranging from 14 up to 60s (and maybe beyond, haven't asked), and we're not the only queer person on board
we mention this partly because it means the class is way more fun, but also because looking at horse bow info on youtube it's very, very male so far, but the horse bow we got shown at the club last week belongs to a woman so that makes it more accessible, assuming we get that far
oh and also, a reasonable horse bow is way cheaper than a reasonable any other kind of bow, because it's just the bow and the string, no extra balances and sights and hand rest sculpting and so on - so we'll definitely be able to afford an okay starting bow once/if we pass the beginners' course
but seriously though, choosing from:
won't be easy - word on the street is that the shorter ones are easier to shoot from a wheelchair so that helps
more fevered archery ramblings after tonight, no doubt
