💜 ✨#HTS ARTIST HIGHLIGHT✨💜 If funk is alive today, @damfunk is the reason. The Los Angeles native has been called the epitome of funk, ambassador for modern funk, the one undisputed originator of modern funk, the forbearer of the modern-funk movement, and “one of the genre’s most passionate proselytizers, out to save it from devilish depictions of cartoonish caricature.” It’s not hyperbole either. People recognize the Pasadena-native for single-handedly reinvigorating a genre that had fallen into ridicule as a Jheri-curled caricature. He rescued funk, put some respect on its name, and brought it into the modern era. No wonder DāM-FunK’s name is ubiquitous with funk as its savior. Being himself and staying true to his love of funk has seen him work with some of music’s most authentic artists. He’s done remixes for Little Dragon, collaborated on albums with Snoop Dogg, and produced albums for Mack 10. Not content; when he released his first full-length album “Toeachizown” on Stones Throw Records in 2008, it birthed the modern funk genre. In the last 24-hours he released “Above The Fray,” his first full-length album in 6 years. Instantly recognizable as DāM-FunK, the album is innovative, yet familiar; like an old friend that came by after a long time away to regale you with fantastic tales of magical places your eyes haven’t feasted on. Pasadena’s own will bring those funky sonic journeys to Hit The Switches in August. “Funk has emotion. Funk has depth,” the father of modern funk claims. “When I play Hit The Switches, my main thing is to make people happy, support other artists, and support the festival. There will be no negativity.” The man who saved funk could very well save you too. #DaMFunK #GlydezoneRecordings #abovethefray #HTS21 #hittheswitches #hellostrangerla #losangeles #funk #freestyle #soul #gfunk #pfunk (at Santa Anita Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR_zdZcnm4M/?utm_medium=tumblr
