(My best friend’s mare is named after her own favorite book, and tsr is mine!) The issue is that I’m really bad at thinking of names. Hello! So, I'm really interested in keeping a betta harem, and I wondered if you had any information? I have a soon-to-be-empty 5.5 gallon (currently housing a baby goldfish... the fishblr community has been a massive, positive source of information, and in about 4 days my baby goldie will be in a 40 gal with a friend) and I was wondering if that would be large enough for three betta ladies? If not, I think I'll get just one, since I've always loved female bettas. (;
Hey! So the term you are actually looking for is a sorority--a harem would be one male betta and several females, which is a really REALLY dangerous combination!
I'm glad to hear that you are rehoming your goldfish to a place where they will be happy!
In a 5.5 gallon your best option is to have one betta, male or female, possibly with an aquatic snail (a nerite snail maybe) or some freshwater shrimp like red cherry shrimp!
Betta sororities are really really delicate communities of fish to keep and I wouldn't recommend that someone who is a beginner to keeping bettas try one! You have to be prepared to rehome any bettas that don't fit into the sorority, and you have to be prepared to treat any injuries that can arise when the females fight with each other (which does happen). You also need a minimum of 7 bettas and minimum 20 gallons of space!
So definitely not a good choice for you.
(Worth noting: I personally I don't agree with keeping female betta sororities in any situation since it doesn't really replicate their normal social hierarchy and often ends up in a lot of dead fish--I have heard way more unsuccessful stories of sororities than I have long-term successful ones.)
