Cameron was quite successful as a music producer for a popular record label in Silver Lake. He had a nice car, a nice house and somewhat of a socialite for a fiance. Most guys would’ve killed to be in his position for the perks alone. If only he had been more passionate about his soon-to-be wife as he was about his music, then maybe he wouldn’t have had to uproot to Eastcliff so abruptly.
Having tapped a drum before he could speak, it was natural for Cameron to fall in love with music. Despite the chaos of living in a full house with 3 younger siblings, he managed to squirrel away some time for learning piano and guitar and keeping a secret songbook wedged beneath his mattress. He’d caught his little sister, Amanda, sneaking a peek at it one day but instead of chiding her, he pulled her into his world and taught her the first chords he’d learned on guitar. The bond they shared over music carried them well into adolescence and it wasn’t any surprise that when Amanda moved to California, Cameron moved out there too to pursue his dreams of producing music professionally.
Cameron was a star at his label and perhaps that’s what brought him and his fiance, Lauryn together; she’d appeared in a music video or two for an artist he was working with and a courtship started from an encounter between them at an industry party. Their relationship was fiery from the start, but cooled off as their commitment grew more serious.. at least for Cameron. Things didn’t feel quite right after he’d put an engagement ring on Lauryn’s finger, but he felt selfish about backing out of it and honestly he hoped that the feeling of uncertainty would pass. But it didn’t.
Doing his best not to face the lukewarm love at home, Cameron pushed himself harder at work and was relieved to discover an up and coming artist, Seline, that he was genuinely impressed by. He poured every ounce of his expertise and time into producing her tracks and mentoring her off the clock. He didn’t see it coming, how his excitement about her project turned into excitement about her. He knew it wasn’t smart to kiss her, to sleep with her, to cheat on Lauryn but it felt exhilarating. This new thing, whatever it was. Cameron had thought he’d been careful about it, but Lauryn found out about his affair and then she made sure that his record label knew that he’d crossed a professional boundary with his artist by sending an email about his cheating to his contacts.
Before Cameron knew it, he was being offered a lump sum to buy him out of his contract by the label execs who didn’t care about the seedy details except to avoid a potential sexual harassment scandal. Cameron was mortified and angry (since this revelation clearly had been a ploy to ruin him by his ex-fiance and the relationship between him and Seline had been completely mutual) but he had to concede that he’d brought this turmoil on himself. If only he’d been honest with Lauryn about the fizzling of their relationship, if only he’d stayed professional with Seline.
Upon deep contemplation of his next steps, Cameron decided to take the money he’d received from the label to quietly slip away with his reputation intact and move to Eastcliff to start over. He purchased his own recording studio. He’d work with local artists, go back to his roots. He’d never been in it for fame anyway. He hasn’t told his sister, the closest person in the world to him, the whole truth about what happened and he’s hoping he won’t have to. He’s afraid of disappointing her, considering he’s been her rock for so long.
