We're getting a puppy! Now what?
Hello! My name is Amy Beth Cupp Dragoo. You might know me as @ABCDdesigns on Instagram and Twitter. My husband and I have been married for nearly six years, and this week we finally decided to get a puppy. (Whooo-hoo!)
We’ve been thinking about rescuing a dog for the last few years. We bought a house in Northwestern Connecticut in 2010. It’s got a large fenced-in yard that seems empty without a dog.
We’ve visited the pound, rescues, and have spent hours upon hours on Pet-Finder and Adopt-A-Pet. We spent the day at Pitt-Bull-a-Palooza in Westport, courted a pair of English Pointer brothers in West Cornwall and in the end we decided to get a Standard Poodle puppy.
Why a Standard Poodle, you ask?
All along we’ve been looking for a non-shedding, smart, friendly, athletic dog. We knew we wanted a large dog who would thrive at our house in the country, but who was refined and calm enough to hold it together in the city.
I met and had my first Standard Poodle experience a few years ago when I worked on a floral design project with my friend Tamara. She has a Standard Poodle named Bridgette who I just adored. Since then, I’ve met several who have portrayed the same attributes that Bridgette has. We’ve done lots of research, and it seems that the Standard Poodle is the right breed for us.
So, there you have it. I’m going to be a dog-mom. I am *so* nervous! (Seriously, I don’t know how people get pregnant and have kids - I have not been able to sleep since we decided to do this.)
I’ve set up this blog to document our pup’s day to day life. You can follow along as he grows up! Next week, we’ll have 5 week group birthday photos. At 7 weeks, we’ll have individual photos and his first haircut. On the 8th week, I fly to Minneapolis St. Paul to meet our boy and bring him home.
I hope you enjoy following along!! All the best, ABCD
