It was hard not to notice him among the people at the Gala. Even with all the Syndicate’s together, he would stand out. Drink after drink shifted into his hands, Mal always careful not to pass that limit. Not with so many threats shoved into one place. It had been a few weeks since that day in the diner, and he couldn’t decide if he was glad to see him from across the room or disappointed that it hadn’t been longer.
Chaos was a part of their life, but what had just went down was something that none of them would have ever suspected. Malakai felt himself moving before he realized it, glass held firmly in hand as people started pointing fingers, shouting accusations. Placing his glass next to the man he had approached, his hand instead wrapped around Xavier’s arm and tugged, not caring if the other objected. If Xavier had anything to do with the Fire losing a man, there would be hell to pay, and he couldn’t be there. “Just come on,” his voice was quiet, especially among the chaos happening around them.
