im super proud of my dad... he saw a documentary on aba the other day and his reaction was basicallyĀ ājesus fuck. what the fuck. why. what the fuck.ā
If you think ABA is okay unfollow me right now
(if you think its ok and want to keep following me, first watch this video and if you still think itās okay unfollow me)
My mom wants to put me in ABA and I'm just like ?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?! Cause its so scary and I've only heard bad things and I'm trying to stop her but she won't and aaaaaaaaaaaAAAAA
usually I wouldnāt give advice here, but the #1 thing I can think of is to get her to watch this video:
Ask an Autistic - What is ABA?Ā (by Amythest Schaber aka Neurowonderful)
Amythest explains that ABA is awful, and whyĀ itās awful.
Also, something Iād like to point out is that ABA, no matter howĀ you explain it, is training a personĀ like a dog.Ā There is NO WAY around this.
how, the fuck, can you goĀ āno client is reported as recoveredā and stillĀ think that your abusive excuse for ~therapy~ is effective!!!

holy fuck, i can cite sources too!!!! for example:
Each subject in the experimental group was assigned several well-trained student therapists who worked (part-time) with the subject in the subjectās home, school, and community for an average of 40 hr per week for 2 or more years [...] High rates of aggressive and self-stimulatory behaviour were reduced by being ignored; by the use of time-out; by the shaping of alternate, more socially acceptable forms of behaviour; and (as a last resort) by the delivery of a loudĀ ānoā or a slap on the thigh contingent upon the presence of the undesirable behaviour (Lovaas, 1987).
but guess what, dipshit? citing sources is only half of actually understanding the information. the other half is critically evaluating information.Ā and if you had bothered to do that at all whatsoever, you mightĀ have come to the conclusion that hitting preschool- and elementary-aged children is fucking unethical and abusive! or you might have come to the conclusion that forty hours of therapy a week for 2+ yearsĀ in children that same age, on topĀ of school and all their other daily activities, is also fucking unethical!
BONUS ROUND: IN LITERALLY THIS SAME FUCKING ARTICLEĀ HE SAYS THATĀ āno client has been reported as recoveredā!!! DIRECT QUOTE, ASSHOLE
re: /post/140375453622 the fact that "discussing current needs" is on a list of potential rewards/reinforcements is terrifying
i knowĀ and like, if you applied this to an nt abled person? people would generally think of it as a huge violation of human rights. but no, our needs arenāt reallyĀ needs, theyāreĀ āreinforcersā to be dangled over our heads
have you ever noticed that like
all these reinforcement charts for aba are made up of things that are considered normal for abled, nt people. likeĀ ātalking with othersā.Ā āsocial praiseā.Ā ātime aloneā.Ā āplaying an instrumentā.Ā āgetting haircutā. and yet suddenly when the person in question is autistic suddenly it becomes acceptable to withhold these things if they donāt perform.
