This is a fic that I wrote for Ren bc of the @aasecretsanta2016 thing.
I’m sorry it is so late but I really tried to make it the best possible that it could be.
Title: The best thing about winter
1333 words
Team Edgeworth (Edgeworth, Kay & Gumshoe)
The prompt was: Enjoying the cold winter
There was something magical about mornings in winter.
Some of them were sunny - and then the light was also different than on summer days.
Some of them were gray, and dark sometimes with the snow and wind howling in the chimneys, that left you feeling like not getting out is the best possible solution for now, and you might as well go back to sleep, rather than fulfill your responsibilities.
On this particular winter morning it was one where the snow settled on the buildings and trees, and the sun was reflecting the whiteness of snow, making the sight spectacular, almost as if one were a part of a holiday greeting card.
Despite the winter mornings looking different they all had this one thing in common.
It was cold.
And the sun lighting the otoczenie around them changed nothing.
Miles Edgeworth liked those mornings the most in particular.
He couldn't say that he had a favorite season - with spring bringing the pollen allergy, summer being too hot on some days, and autumn making the days shorter and December approaching every year.
But this kind of weather was the most enjoyable - if walking in the cold snow is something you can enjoy.
Usually in winter, he got to work before the sun got up and long after it set. Today he decided to go on a walk because it was one of the rare days where he didn't have a case, or wasn't buried in paperwork all the time.
Although 'decided' was a debatable term, especially because it involved Kay Faraday.
Yes, it was because of her that he decided to get out on this fine winter morning on a walk, and request a free day in advance.
One day, a postcard arrived to the prosecutor's office. At first it sounded suspicious but Edgeworth knew of only one person who would refer to someone as Gummy.
"3rd sun feb 11am. make it convenient 4 u 2 b there. Ppl's park side entrance behind the tall trees. Hope 4 winter weather. Gummy will be there 2. xoxox K.F."
And it wasn't the first time she send him those postcards too. Usually that involved some kind of secret investigation information, or if she was in the country, she'd go into his office and Kay, Miles and Gumshoe would go out for lunch.
Edgeworth wondered why exactly winter weather was important.
He was going to find out about this sooner rather than later.
When he arrived on the spot she told him to be, he saw her and Detective Gumshoe already up to something.
There weren't many people out yet, apparently most of them decided to observe the scenery from inside their cozy homes - it was the mid winter break after all.
This fact made Miles Edgeworth easily recognizable in the vast amount of white snow.
When Kay noticed the approaching figure she stopped whatever she was doing and waved enthusiastically into his general direction.
"Oiii!! Mr. Edgeworth!! Over here!!"
She didn't need to yell - or wave at him for that matter, because her calling card did tell him exactly where to meet them. But still it has been a while since all three of them hanged out like this.
"Apologies for being late." Miles said when he got there.
"You're not late Mr. Edgeworth, we just arrived earlier."
"So what exactly is the purpose of this?"
"We're going to make a snowman. And also have a snowball fight."
"What?"
"That's right Mr. Edgeworth. Turns out this is the perfect winter weather, and the snow is exactly good for making snowmen."
Edgeworth was dumbfounded.
"You called me out here, on this particular day to build a snowman with you?"
"And also for the new team Yatagarasu to spend time together. When was the last time we saw each other? October?"
"Actually, it was November."
"See, not really a chance to make snowmen then. But now we can, so let's get to work before the sun sets."
Before Edgeworth had the time to make any objections, Kay and Gumshoe got back to whatever they were doing before he got here.
"Do we have.. a strategy for how this particular snowman would look like?" he asked, seeing as Kay was searching for something particular on the ground and Gumshoe stood beside him.
"I'm not sure there needs to be a strategy for this, sir." said the detective looking into the distance.
Kay got back to them and enthusiastically assigned their workload. It was a classical snowman with three parts and, although the snow was wet and thus perfect for making both snowmen and snowballs, a skill was still needed to craft round orbs, not something that resembled a mound.
Kay helped them with her instructions apparently very aware of how this particular snowman would look like.
Two hours later, they were done.
It was a team effort. Aside from sticks from hands and the traditional carrot for a nose, somehow it had also a drawing of Edgeworth's jabot and it's hands were raised in an "Objection" pose, because Kay thought it would look cool.
"Do we want to name him something, pal?"
"Gentlemen, I present to you... Snowman Edgesnow" Kay said solemnly.
"The only thing he has in common with me is the jabot."
"It was just a suggestion though. We don't need to name him anything if you don't want to. Makes it less sad when the snow melts."
"You do have a point."
They admired their handiwork in contemplative silence, and then Kay took out her camera.
"How about a photo then?"
"Is this absolutely necessary?"
"Of course! It's for the future reference. And it would've been a waste of time if we didn't immortalize Edgesnow after two hours of working on him."
Despite her words that the snowman wouldn't have a name, she referred to him as such.
"Well, it is alright then. But only one photo."
"Of course. Gummy please hold the camera since you are the tallest."
The picture was taken - with the snowman in the middle, Kay behind it making a peace sign, and Miles smiling slightly, and Gumshoe positioning the camera on all of them.
"Looks great!" said Kay as she got to see it. She then hid her camera in her bag, and looked at her two companions.
"So what do we do now?" She asked, which made Gumshoe and Edgeworth look at her confused.
"I believe you mentioned something about a snowball fight, didn't you?"
"Yeah, but that was before we all worked so hard on Edgesnow, and I'm kinda hungry. How about we go eat somewhere?"
"Do you have any particular place in mind?" Miles knew that she had planned this long beforehand. And knowing her, one of them will have to treat all three of them.
"Whatever serves hot soup or tea. I'm freezing, too, now that I think of it." she said, putting her gloved hands into her pockets.
"I think I know a place that serves good ramen if you're up to it?"
"Good idea, Gummy! Let's go then."
"Are you sure you want to go already?" Miles asked, just to make sure.
He wouldn't mind spending more time outside with the two of them, but then again seeing as both of them already went in the direction of the exit of the park, he wouldn't object to get somewhere warmer.
"Of course."Kay said contemplatively, walking backwards so she could face him, and then added:
"You know, the best thing about winter is, after all, getting warmed up after a long cold walk. Ramen sounds perfect. The last one is paying!" she said as she strode of running, and Edgeworth and Gumshoe followed, also running, behind her.
It wasn't the first time she gave rhythm, and direction to their little group, and as the three of them occasionally threw snowballs at each other on the way to the ramen shop, Edgeworth realized that he wouldn't have it any other way.
