‘The full moon became like blood’

The Book of Revelation describes a scroll in God’s right hand that is protected with seven seals. The resurrected Christ opens the first four of the seven seals, which summons four horsemen. The one mounted on a bright red horse wields the power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other.

Johannes Josephus Aarts (1871-1934) may have been thinking of that horseman when he made this engraving, probably in the 1920s when he’d turned to apocalyptic scenes.
