hoping this doesn’t leave my small social since i don’t want this to blow up and invite polarizing discourse, but as a psych major i do kinda wanna talk about this ongoing trend of villainizing therapists/mental health professionals which i think is concerningly anti-treatment and care, so maybe this is really boring but as someone who does care about mental heath
many people online, maybe just on my twitter feeds and tiktok, talk a lot about having bad experiences with therapists in particular, and to be honest i agree with 95% of their experiences and say their therapists suck because they gave bad advice or did something they shouldn’t have. but a lot of people i feel like may not realize that a lot of these experiences can be ethics code violations which should be reported.
for example, i saw a couple of people talk about how they lost their partner or their partner ends up with their therapist. this is an ethics code violation because not only is it conflict of interest, but it is also an abuse of power that causes harm and is a destruction of confidentiality. by far this is the most common and horrific story i’ve heard from people and whoever does this deserves to get their license revoked.
also idk who needs to hear this but psychologists, therapists, counsellors, and psychiatrists are all different people! they may all practice psychotherapy but their experience, expertise, and knowledge will vary depending on who they are! sometimes a therapist isn’t experience enough to give someone proper care and would benefit from going to a psychologist who would have more years in the field! also remember there are many kinds of therapy! #prorecovery!
