According to the updated practice parameter on rhinitis: "Seasonal allergic rhinitis symptoms generally do not develop until 2 to 7 years of age... The prevalence of seasonal allergic rhinitis is higher in children and adolescents, whereas perennial allergic rhinitis has a higher prevalence in adults."

IgE testing (skin is typically preferred over blood) is recommended for patients with a clinical diagnosis of AR who don’t respond to empiric treatment, when the diagnosis is uncertain, or when knowledge of the causative allergen is needed to target therapy.
