“Black magic. Black widow. Black crud and rust-- black nothing. Still nothing, but brilliant now. Brilliant because now I burn.”

Synesthesia
Step steadily through sheets of rain and stumble with the breeze, each pause bitter on your tongue. It is yellow like unmolded wax. Vowels dance and fall, twist and drift in the waves. Consonants bounce with consonance—opera or jumping rope, perhaps a car crash: 20 car pile-up on Houston Interstate West. Punch your chest and hear your thick ribs crack, fingernail crescent imprints along your hips, a caress to the crease of your inner thigh—this poetry is war and sex or it is wrong. Grasp the ground until your fingers bleed before the dark purple of newborn eyelids grows into nothing but black.

Desert melts for miles, rolling, rolling. We become it, faded and hot to the touch, whisked away with the sand. We become ghost towns, sad stories, empty lakes who somehow survive, Death without letting go. We become abandoned art in Randsburg and marijuana in New Mexico, moccasins, mispronunciations, fresh cherries bleeding down your lips. We become alcohol induced explosions and sober realizations, floating and crashing, nothing and everything in between. We become hard liquor warm in your belly, the sun burning down your throat, roads that never end, the beginnings of something unknown. - A. Marie (Photo creds: Sophia Baker)
royal
Rest outside your castle,
A commoner on his knees.
Treasure is a glance
From your royalty.
My powerful princess,
My precious prince,
Leading through
But serving since.
Dancing in your story,
Head bowed to you.
They don’t know you’re a diamond daisy,
But I do.
See, I’m a kind of wild,
Darker with every weed.
Ward you off with wooden swords
To keep you climbing trees.
You could break every branch, darling,
Get a little lost.
It would be my honor
To grant you silence in my chaos.
Here, I’ll take a bow
Like I’ve done something to see.
The crowd will clap for the commoner,
But he was saved by the queen.

It's when you come close that I realize, you're further from me than ever before.

Dysphoria
Say confused Uncertain Lost. They're right. Having a box— Check— Only assigns Inmates. Slam too-soft Hands Against Walls of my Square. Skin Doesn't fit. Neither Does anyone Else's. All Wrong. Demand "You are here" On binary I don't Understand. Here? Where? There? No. I don't belong. Glance down Say, this body Isn't mine. Silly thing, The mind, Just Wanting A box To call Its Own.
Let's Say
Let's say, for argument's sake, I am irrevocably in love with you. Madness, I know, darling, but stick with me. & let's say, for argument's sake, you're possibly in love with me, too even if I am the epitome of bullets against a headstone. Loud. Useless. Disrespectful. Let's say, you still explode into sunlight, saying it's my story, but I'm maybe not the main character— remove your mask, & be who you want anyway. Mardi Gras. American Dream. Bullshit. What if I want sardine stacked into subway, blank face blank pen. Safe with sidewalks, heels that click. What if I want rerun reality tv, morning breath, stale orange juice, yesterday's paper unread in the bathroom, recipes from a supermarket cookbook Let's say, for argument's sake, we're nothing special, & irrevocably in love. D'you think it'd be enough to still change the world? -A. Marie
